Draco's task

Me and Draco were inseparable all summer, but I could tell that he was hiding something from me. When I tried to speak to him about it, he would just brush me off.
I asked Narcissa about it, and she told me not to ask questions, but that didn't stop me.
If Draco was in trouble, then I wanted to know about it.
Me and Draco had been having private lessons with his Aunt Bellatrix. Most of what she taught us was dark magic.
But she also taught us a branch of magic called Occlumency, which enables us to keep our thoughts to ourselves. It stops people, like Voldemort, from invading our minds, and learning our secrets.
It was during these lessons that me and Draco discovered a secret power, that we didn't know we had.

While we both trying to clear our minds, I suddenly heard Draco's voice inside my head. Which is when we realised, that we could talk to each other, without speaking aloud.
It wasn't the same as reading each others thoughts. But in enabled us to have conversations together in secret, while other people were in the room.
We decided not to tell anyone about this ability, as we thought Voldemort would want us to use it, for evil purposes.
So we kept it our own little secret. But since the Manor is mostly empty, we don't use it much. As there is no need, since we are often the only ones in the room.

In the final week of the holidays, Voldemort returned, and asked to see me alone, as he often did, before I went back to school. Draco was hesitant to let me go in alone, but he had no choice, saying no, to the Dark Lord, was not a wise move.
I met him in the same room, where we had held our previous meetings. Except this time there was no Lucius cowering in the corner. It was just me, and him.
Being alone with Voldemort was nerve-wracking, but I was determined not to show my fear.

"So good to see you again, Zoe" he said, as I entered the room.
"You too, my Lord" I replied.
"You'll be glad to know, that I do not have a task for you to do, when you return to school"
"What about Draco?"
"Young Mister Malfoy does have a job to do"
"Can't it be given to someone else?"
"You care deeply about the boy, that is obvious. But I'm afraid this particular job can only be done by him"
"I see"
"I'm sure you will want to help him. But I must insist that you do not"
"Aren't two heads better than one?"
"In some cases yes. But I fear that you would be a distraction for Draco, and he needs to keep his mind on his job".

"A distraction? I'm his fiancè" I said angrily.
"Precisely. His focus would be on you, and not what he is supposed to be doing. If you love him, you will let him get on with it" replied Voldemort.
"You want me to stay away from him?"
"Not completely. But I do not want you interfering, or asking him about what his mission is, do you understand?"
"Don't you trust me, my Lord?"
"I trust all my followers. But I have only told certain Death Eaters about this plan. And since it takes place at Hogwarts, I fear that you would just get in the way"
"I... I understand, my Lord"
"Good. Well, I have no further use for you at the moment, so I will leave you be. Enjoy your time at school, while it lasts".

Once I left the room after Voldemort, I found Draco waiting for me.
"What did he want?" Draco asked.
"Nothing" I replied.
Draco folded his arms, not believing my answer.
"Honestly. He didn't want anything from me" I continued.
"Then why did he want to speak to you?"
"To tell me to leave you alone, and stop asking you what your mission is. It's apparently very important, and I shouldn't get in the way. I'm just a distraction according to him".

Draco placed his hands on my arms.
"You are not just a distraction. You are the most important thing in my life" he said softly.
"Thanks... But he is right. Your job must be very important, and I don't want to get in the way. Because I know what would happen in you failed him" I replied.
"That is not going to happen. I am going to succeed, and keep us all safe"
"I hope you're right".
Draco kissed my cheek.
"Come on. Lets go and eat some lunch" he suggested.
"Alright then" I replied, sighing as I linked my arm through his.
I didn't want to go back to school. Draco always changed when he was around his peers. And I didn't want the boy I loved, to become a bullying pompous prat again.
I hoped that he had begun to change, in all aspects of his life, and not just the parts that included me.
