Nothing Was The Same

"Oh, come on, honey, just listen to me. I know I was wrong to keep that from you but you have to see it from my perspective."

Tristen turned around so fast she was sure she would have whiplash. "And what is your perspective? To keep a secret from me so I wouldn't be able to have more time to cope with y'all getting a divorce? Real good idea, mom," she spat, narrowing her eyes.

"Will you let me get a word in?" Linda shouted. "Yes, I kept it from you. I only did that so you wouldn't worry about it more than your schoolwork. You have to understand that. I was thinking of you, even though you might not think so."

This caused Tristen to go silent. She didn't know how to respond to this nor how to react.

"I...I just need some time, mom. This is a lot of information to be taking in at one time and I'm just trying to process it all."

Her mom sighed. "Take all the time you need, honey. Just know that I'm here for you even though it might not seem like it right now."

Tristen nodded as her mom left the room. She went upstairs to her room and sat on her balcony, smiling as the warm southern breeze blew her hair gently. Tristen smiled at the feeling. It was so soothing, like God's little stress reliever. She slouched in her chair a little bit more, now sitting at an angle where the sun shone on her face.

Why would she ever leave this place and move somewhere else? This home was all she had ever known, and she liked it that way. She didn't understand why people wanted to move from a small town to a big city; in her opinion, it made them look like they were running from something...or someone.

After sitting outside for a half hour, she went back into her room and sat at her desk, then logged in to her laptop. She checked Wattpad and Twitter, but stopped scrolling through her timeline when she saw something that caught her eye.

"@melanieyoung: "@jackgilinsky: Officially done with high school #graduated" hell yeah, fuckin' right! #CO2014"

Who is this Jack Gilinsky? Tristen thought. She clicked on his name and saw that he had close to a million followers. But, being the girl she is, she clicked on his profile picture.

"Holy hell," she breathed. This kid was hot, no doubt about it. She spent the next hour looking through his profile, reading all his tweets, looking through his pictures, even looking at profiles of people he mentioned in tweets.

(((you're lying if you say you've never done this)))

As fast as she could, she opened up Vine in another tab and searched for Jack and Jack. She clicked on the first profile she saw, and when she saw the most recent post, she knew she hit the jackpot.

"So, yeah, we just graduated," a blonde boy said. If she was being honest, he was cute too.

The post showed a group of people at a graduation throwing their hats up in the air with camera flashes all around. She watched it a couple times before scrolling down their page.

Tristen watched all their vines, but as all people do, she had her favorites.

- "Eric and I are about to go vandalize some stuff!"

"Hi!"

"Are you sure about this?"

"Yeah just do it!"

- "People ask me, 'Jack, why do you feel the need to be shirtless in all your vines?' and I'm like, 'I'm not even shirtless, I'm naked.'"

- "Congrats, you're the millionth viewer!"

"Of what?"

"This tree!"

"Alright..?"

"Here's your new iPhone!"

"Cool."

"Ha! Not so fast, fill this out and give me your credit card info!"

Their vines had her laughing so hard her stomach hurt. How had she not heard of them before? She followed both Jacks, Johnson and Gilinsky, on all her social media before shutting down her computer.

"Hey girl hey!" Kelsey said when Tristen walked in. "How have you been?"

Tristen sighed. "Meh. That's why I came over."

"Oh my god, okay, um, let's go to my room and we can talk, 'kay?" Tristen just nodded.

"So what's up?" Kelsey asked, slightly fearing the answer she would receive.

"Well, in less than forty-eight hours, I graduated, then found out my boyfriend of three years was cheating on me for the past year, and to top it all off, my parents are getting a divorce," Tristen sighed. Even saying these things out loud made them seem worse.

Kelsey was silent for a minute. "I'm not going to pity you, because that's not going to make anything better. So I'm just gonna say the truth; all that sucks, and there's no way to fix it. You can't mend your parent's relationship, but you're not the reason they're divorcing. You can't take back that whole year that Dylan cheated on you, but you can sure as hell know that you're too good for him."

Silence fell upon the girls as Tristen processed the words. It was true, pity wouldn't help anything. She surely couldn't mend her parents crumbling relationship, and Dylan cheating had nothing to do with her actions.

"You're right. I can't go around feeling sorry for myself, or even angry at everyone else. None of these things are because of me, and I shouldn't beat myself up about them. Why fix a problem you didn't cause?"

Kelsey nodded. "Exactamundo, my friend. Now, how bout we hit up the club?"

Tristen winked. "Of fucking course." Both girls grinned and ran to Kelsey's closet, eager to find clothes that would for sure get them free drinks.

Tonight is gonna be a great night.
