As I run along the road I try not to think. It’s like if I think to hard my head will explode. After what seems like hours and I’m still on the same road without seeing any other roads, I know I have to make a change. If it is werewolves that are looking for me, they can not only track me but also run faster than me. If I keep running in a straight line on a road then they will catch up with me in no time. I have to make a change. I start jogging from one side of the road to the other so it’s not a straight line to track. Where I’m running the road had a steep, twenty thirty foot drop off. Without really thinking it through I run to the left side of the road and jump off.
For the second time today I doubt my decision to jump. I don’t land this jump as easily as the other one. I don’t jump up immediately. I curl up in a ball in pain. As I’m biting my lip from crying out, a small part of my mind is thinking something else. When will Victoria, Dan and Johnny notice my absence? I crawl to my feet slowly as my muscles ache. I rub my shoulder which took in a lot of the impact. I slowly limp my way into the woods. Now at a walk, I wonder if the jump was in vain and if it will pay off in the mean time. If the wolves are running after me they will run past where I jumped off the road. This will make them have to double back and retrace their steps till they pick my sent up again. I try not to walk parallel to the road. With the road in sight I walk at an angle, angling away from the road.
In the woods it’s even harder to see in the dark more than once I trip. The only good thing is my muscles seem to have recovered and I’m not limping as badly anymore.
A couple hours later I hear the cry of wolves. I can’t run the way I need to. Staying close to the road will do me no good anymore. Losing the road I head deeper into the woods. Approaching ten minutes later I heard the wolf cries stop cold turkey. They must have passed where I jumped and are now back tracking. It worked! I celebrate in my head. The party is short lived when moments later the cry is back. The hunt is on and I’m the prey. I suppress the pain in my leg and break into a quick jog, Ouch Ouch Ouch is all I can think every time that leg hits the ground. As I run with the wolves voices urging me on I become aware of the fact that my surrounds have changed. No longer is it just pine trees but also oak trees, maple trees and thicker underbrush. I’ve reached a much older section of the forest. This area has had years to grow and become over grown. I can no longer make my way through the thick underbrush in the darkness. I trip over again and again. All my hopes of escaping vanish when logic tells me that I’m being hunted by werewolves in a dark forest I can’t navigate.
The tree line breaks and I find myself in a clearing no bigger than a house. Overhead the moon shines down on me. In an instant the clearing is truly beautiful and peaceful. With the moon shining on the trees at precisely the right angle and the shadows cast by the trees. The way the moon light made the leaves shine. All too soon the howling behind me shatters the beautiful moment. The only thing louder than the wolves is me gasping for air. I hadn’t realized I was until I was standing still. I jog to the other side of the clearing and face the way I came. I want to face my attackers.
First to entire is the light brown wolf that must be Dan. I can’t help but gasp when he first enters the clearing. The way the moon light touches his coat is simply breath taking. He stops when he spots me. His piercing eyes stare right at me. He throws his head back a howls a long and bone chilling cry. I flinch at how long it is. To Dan’s right a wolf enters the clearing. When the moon light hits him I see that it’s Johnny. Now where is dear Victoria?
I thought hits me something Dan said about me making her mad with the stunt I pulled. Despite his words I have pulled that stunt again and she must be furious with me. Plus the fact that I got away when she was suppose to be on guard means she is probably mad enough to kill…me.
Once Johnny is beside Dan he stops and glances at him. Dan turns his gaze from me and looks at Johnny and with that they turn to me. To say they were stalking would start to cover what they were doing. If you have ever seen a pride of lions hunt then you have an idea of what they were doing. Johnny is to me left and be moves back into the woods. Dan comes straight at me. He is moving at a relaxed jog yet he holds his head with purpose and his eyes never leave me. I can see Johnny moving at the same pace just inside the tree line. I close my eyes and take a deep breath. All I can do is wonder where the missing piece is, Victoria. Dan basically in charge of Johnny and he, I try and remember where the leader of a pack is in a hunt.
When I open my eyes I can see the movement in the shadows and I know that the danger is near. I know the packs move as one. So I know there must be more, but where? Behind me the dead leaves rustle. A branch breaks under unseen weight. My heavy breath is so loud I can’t make out more than want they want me to hear. Despite my disadvantages, I’m still using all I’ve got to the best of my ability. One second I hear the parting of air to a fast moving object and the next……….darkness.
