RECAP

Once Johnny is beside Dan he stops and glances at him.  Dan turns his gaze from me and looks at Johnny and with that they turn to me.  To say they were stalking would start to cover what they were doing.  If you have ever seen a pride of lions hunt then you have an idea of what they were doing.  Johnny is to my left and is moves back into the woods.  Dan comes straight at me.  He is moving at a relaxed jog yet he holds his head with purpose and his eyes never leave mine.  I can see Johnny moving at the same pace just inside the tree line.  I close my eyes and take a deep breath.  All I can do is wonder where the missing piece is, Victoria.  Dan is basically in charge of Johnny and he, I try and remember where the leader of a pack is in a hunt.

When I open my eyes I can see the movement in the shadows and I know that the danger is near. I know the packs move as one. So I know there must be more, but where? Behind me the dead leaves rustle. A branch breaks under unseen weight. My heavy breath is so loud I can’t make out more than want they want me to hear. Despite my disadvantages, I’m still using all I’ve got to the best of my ability. One second I hear the parting of air to a fast moving object and the next……….darkness.

I slip in and out of conscious. I never stay awake for long. I would open my eyes yet they could never focus on any one thing because black would creep around the edges of my vision before dragging me into it completely. I think I’m in some sort of hospital type setting.

There is an IV in my arm and a heart monitor beeping beside me. I can’t remember much, like why I’m here in the first place. I remember running away from the cabin and jumping off the road. Is that why I’m here in this hospital bed because I hit my head when I fell? I get flashes of other things though. These flashes they are like scattered memories; limping through woods, a clearing, moonlight dancing off trees, a wolf staring at me. They come so quickly yet leave even faster I can’t piece anything together. My sides are sore along with my shoulders and my leg. I have bandages around my head, arm, midsection and leg. How I got all this from a fall I couldn’t tell you. I wonder if my kidnappers brought me here or if someone else found me? The other thing is I hear voices when I wake for short periods of time. Sometimes they are just mumbles, sometimes I can hear them clearly like they are talking to me, and other times there is shouting. Very rarely when I wake I can see a faces leaning over me. They looked concerned but I never get to look long before their faces fade.

I have a dream that I’m back home with my brother Richard. We are in the kitchen cooking spaghetti, listening to music, and laughing. Richard has a cream colored apron on and a chef’s white hat on. Richard is a very good cook. In my dream I’m sitting on the counter by the stove laughing at Richard. He is doing one of his famous impressions of someone we know. As always I’m laughing so hard I’m crying as he waves a wooden spoon in the air for emphasis. It’s such a happy dream I wonder if it’s really a memory. We shared so many moments like this just sitting in the kitchen cooking food and laughing together. That’s the main thing that brought Richard and I together after our parents died, because we had to eat something we would do it together. Cooking in the afternoon became my favorite part of the day. Spending time with Richard just laughing and carrying on brought us so close that whenever we had company over while we were cooking it just didn’t feel right. Richard and I both became excellent cooks, even making some of our own recipes. I got so caught up in the dream I believe it to be real, and when reality hit me, I almost cried.
