AMARU'S hand worked on the page as she scribbled down the words circulating around in her mind. This Way by Khalid bounced off her lilac painted walls, creating a soothing atmosphere. Wiping the pad of her thumb on her tongue she flipped the page and continued to formulate her thoughts on the blank, lined sheet of paper in her journal.

I am not sorry for my brown skin, a magical mix of honey, gold, and the perfect hue of melanin.

I am not sorry for my corrupted curls, and I will not "tame" them for society's cracked mirror of beauty.

I am not sorry for my lips, as full as the moon at the sky's darkest hour.

I am not sorry for my wide hips that stretch as far as the horizon.

The echo of her dog barking interrupted her writing process. Closing her journal she hid it under her mattress and climbed back on top of her blanket listening to every lyric.

It was a Friday night and just like any other weekend, Amaru cuddled with her pillow in between her legs with her slow rhythm and blues flowing as she stared at the ceiling, wishing she was anywhere else but here.

Her prayers were answered as her iPhone XS Max alarmed in the room. She picked it up sliding her finger across the screen and lifting it up to her ear.

"How may I help you ma'am?"

"Bitch it's a fucking friday and yo cute ass is at home sulking for no damn reason." Loren's loud, seductive tone voiced in the phone.

Loren is one of Amaru's closest friends. The girls met in the summer of their sophomore year and Loren disliked the hell out of Amaru. For more reasons than one, but mostly because her conservative personality.

Once she started spending time with Amaru, she changed her view on her and warmed up to her, dropping the barrier around her heart. Amaru was a piece of sunshine she liked to secure in her mental, but like the sun, she goes down too.

Amaru wished to hang up on her friend and venture off into a deep slumber, but she did not want to be rude. Instead she placed the phone hetween her ear and shoulder blade, thumbing with the pages of her journal.

"Lorie you know I don't like going out on the weekends. Why won't you leave me to do that?" Amaru complained, sitting up to turn down the volume on her stereo.

"I don't caree Amaru, get your boney ass up and get dressed. I'm coming to pick you up in the next twenty minutes so chop chop." She added, disconnecting the call.
