Chapter Five • Is it too late now to say sorry

       The next few days where awkward with Lara and her dad. They didn't talk much and Lara stayed in her room when she wasn't at school. As for her and Peter, they'd still hangout at school but she'd not done anything with him. Peter told her that he couldn't stop liking her , despite what her dad felt about him.  It was a cool October Thursday night and Lara felt she'd needed to talk to her dad about what happened. She waited till they finished up dinner and Kitty left the room. "Dad" she said looking over at him , "can I talk to you." He looked over at her with a stern look and said " Yea, I guess what is it." "Listen, I know I disobeyed your rules... big time... but it is not what it looked like, me and Peter did nothing" she said. Lara knew she was lying , but if she could prove to her dad she wasn't as bad as it looked, things would go back to normal. Her dad looked over at her scrunching his eyebrows together , " So you're telling me ... that you invited your 'friend' over and did nothing with him. Lara his zipper was undone. Don't play stupid." Lara hit her fists against the table and stood up "Dad, I don't expect you to believe me but , when you came in the doors Peter had just gotten back from the bathroom, he probably forgot to do up his pant zipper. Plus it's not like I ever had sex with a guy anyways..especially with Kitty home??" She could see her dad started to believe her as he said "Well I guess I didn't think about that, Lara it's just you know how you feel about boys. Your not ready to be in a relationship until you're at-least finished high school." She nodded and 'agreed'. Her dad stood up and said "If that's what you're telling me is true, I believe you. How about we invite Peter over for dinner. I feel I should apologize for being rude to him." She looked at him with surprise and said "I think that would be a great idea!"
            That night Lara went up to her room and called Peter , she'd told him what her dad said and how she'd gotten it past him. Peter was very glad to hear that he didn't practically want to shoot him. "So, come over for dinner tomorrow night?" She said biting her lip. "Ahh, I guess so Lara Jean, I'll try not to get hard thinking about you before I come." He made a little chuckle. They finished up their conversation and she got ready for bed. Lara was so happy that her dad actually believed the lie she'd told her dad. She knew it was wrong to lie to him but, it was for the best. Maybe, she'd get to hangout with him more 'as friends'.
             Early Friday morning Lara's alarm went off at 6:30am. Ugh she thought, at least it's Friday. She got up and did the same thing she does every school morning. Brushed her teeth, picked out a floral shirt , jean jacket and a black skirt. She paired it with  brown leather combat boots. As she went down for breakfast , there was a smile on her face as she walked past Kitty and her dad. "Good morning beautiful girls" Her dad said to them. They served up breakfast then, Lara got Kitty to get in the car as she drove her to school. Kitty looked over at Lara and said "you seem in a good mood today, you know I may be 11 but I am not stupid." Lara smiled and rolled her eyes "yes kitty , I know you're not stupid , but you're too young to discuss this with. Just know everything is okay now." She waved bye as Kitty got out and met her friends at school. Peter sent her a text saying 'I'm waiting for you at the bench outside chem class.' She replied and made her way to Atler high school.
Even though she hadn't hung out with Jamie recently she still talked to her every night and hung out during Calculus they'd had together. She got out of her car, locked the doors and then walked over to Peter. As she was walking towards him she kept thinking how lucky she was. Peter put his hands over his mouth as she walked towards him and said "god damn Lara Jean Covey, you are so beautiful. Do you wanna like date me or something " She laughed and gave him and big hug. "So you're asking me to date you now" she said. "Well I will, and I would love to now but ... you're dad only thinks we're friends" he said sadly. "You know what Peter" she looked into his eyes, "Let's do this. Let's actually date. My dad doesn't have to know. We can hangout whenever I get the chance, I'll just tell him I'm going out somewheres and then we can meet up. Besides he thinks we're friends anyways." He looked at her raising his eyebrows and said "Well L.J I think that's a great idea, as long as I don't piss off your dad again. Seriously I wanna grow old with you so if your dad doesn't want you to date till you finish high school, let's make sure he doesn't find out about us again." "It's so hard not to want to be with you. It's like, I wanna go to breakfast with your family but first fuck you in the back of my truck cause your so sexy." he said. Lara looked up at him with a dirty voice and said "Oh yea" pulling his shirt and getting on her tip toes "Well we'll have to try that sometime." They both kissed as the first bell went off. "Ahh, let's go do some fun things in Chemistry" he said, walking to class together.
The chemistry class passed as Lara still sat with Shane. She's not want to loose the people close to her so she decided that today she'd go to lunch with Jamie. The class went by very slowly as Mr.Smith talked and talked. The bell rang for first class to be over as Mr.Smith said "now do not forget about the research assignments due next Wednesday. You all have a great weekend." Peter waited for Lara outside of the doors and said "Now... I'm not gonna see you next class so have a great lunch Covey." She smiled and added "you too Kavinsky." They walked there separate ways to second class. After that was over, Peter went with his group of Lacrosse friends and Lara met up with Jamie. "So let's get the fuck out of here and go to subway" Jamie said as they walked out to her car. Jamie had a 2010 silver Ford Fusion. Lara didn't love driving with her because she smoked. Jamie didn't smoke in her car but she always had a pack of cigarettes in the cup holder. They drove off for lunch and got back just before the third period bell rang. Lara Jean and Jamie had Calculus together so they'd walked to it. Their Calculus class was very boring and long. After a boring hour the last class bell rang. Lara had History and Jamie had Gym. Lara said bye to Jamie as she walked to her locker like she always did.
L.J remembered what Peter said about their classes and how he'd saw her from the top of the stairs. When she got to her locker she looked to the top of the stairs, only to see him looking at her smiling there. He came walking down the stairs saying bye to his friends from Geology class he'd just had. "Well hello there" he said opening her locker door enough to kiss her and not everyone in the hallway to see. She smiled and asked him how lunch was. He said "Well it was okay, I mean the guys wanna meet you. They said they've saw you around." She laughed and said "me?!" with a strange look on her face... "your friends want to meet me?" "Yes of course" he said. "Well then I'll come to your Lacrosse game Sunday and cheer you on." He looked at her in aw and said "god this is why I love you." For a split second she thought.. wow he just said he loved me for the first time kinda. He walked her to her last class of the day Food Science. It was a stupid class that she needed a credit for to graduate. Food Science was a course that taught you about basic food preparation and how to make sure your food is safe. He said goodbye to her as she went to walk in the door, she quickly turned around, pointing at him "Peter don't forget about dinner tonight at my place." He looked back at her and said "god how could I forget. Can't wait!" He said yelling down the hallways. They both finished their classes and Lara went to her car and drove home.
She thought on the drive home that, this was the night to make sure her dad was good with Peter. That they'd just be friends and that nothing was happening between them. After all she was allowed to have a few 'only friends' that were guys. She got home and her and Kitty watched a movie '16 candles' as she relaxed on the cool fall afternoon. Peter went to his closet and found the nicest, classiest outfit to wear to their dinner tonight. She waited till her dad got home and she asked him what they were making for dinner. He said he had everything but the steaks. She said "no worries dad I'll go get some for you. Go clean up from work." He said "thank you" and have her $50. "Kitty are you coming?" Lara said. "For sure." She replied. They went to the nearest grocery store and got 4 steaks. Her and Kitty blasted her favourite songs on the drive home. Kitty loved being with Lara. As she got home with the food her dad was preparing vegetables and mashed potatoes. She passed him the steaks as he cooked them. "Peter will be here in 30minutes dad so please, don't be crazy on him and just try to get along" Lara said to her dad. Kitty set the table as Lara went upstairs to put on a new outfit and get ready. Even though her dad thought they were just close friends , she knew she wanted to look good for her boyfriend. She put on a stripped roll-neck sweater with a jean skirt. She re-straightened her hair. Peter buzzed her phone with a text that said 'On my way.'
