Pidge's POV
I spent the rest of the day avoiding the other paladins. Yeah, I know that's not a healthy way to deal with things, but it works for me. Mostly I just sit in my room and browse the internet or code something.
Halfway through typing a new algorithm for my room lights, I hear a knock on my door. I don't say anything.
"Pidge, come on!" It's Allura. "We know you're in there."
Silence for a few ticks. Then- a sigh.
"I'm coming in!" My eyes widen and I fumble with the lock activation, but Allura's in before I can do anything.
She just looks at me for a bit, disappointment evident in her eyes.
"Pidge-"
"I don't care what you say. I'm not going out there."
"That's not what I-"
"Yeah, sure, Allura. I know how you think. You're just a know-it-all, spoiled princess who's used to getting her way. If you weren't, you wouldn't have been stuck in that pod for a thousand years." I poured out at the pent-up frustration and anger from the past few weeks- at Rei, at Zarkon, at the universe.
Allura stared at me, her eyes sparkling with fresh tears. I realized what I'd done.
"Wait, Allura, I-"
"Don't say any more. I'll- Ill just leave. I'm sure you're happier by- by yourself." She could barely get the words out before she left, slamming the door.
Over the sobs, I could hear Lance and Keith comforting her outside. I turned and slammed my head on the wall, tears coming to my eyes as well.
"I can't do anything right." I mumble. "I can't comfort Rei. I can't be nice. I can't keep friends. I can't keep track of my family."
Rei's POV
Next thing I know, I'm stirring drowsily on the floor of my room, door to my back. I sit up slowly, but immediately fall back.
My head throbbing with what feels like a migraine, I try to stand and walk to my bed. It takes a lot of energy, but I make it.
Chugging down water and holding my head, the events of the past hour come back to me: Olkarion is gone. Home is gone.
Strangely enough, I feel numb to it all. Pidge doesn't even cross my mind until a few ticks afterwards. I sit up immediately.
"Oh, god..." She must be so worried! Or worse, I hurt her.
Pulling my phone out, I do the first thing I think of. I text her:
R: Hey, are you okay? Sorry, I blacked out.
. . .
P: No kidding.
R: Sorry...
P: Shouldn't I be asking you if you're okay?
R: Let's not talk about that right now.
P: ...
P: Okay.
R: Wyd?
I don't get an answer. I start to get anxious and fiddle with my phone. Suddenly I jump.
"Rei?" Pidge's voice is quiet, defeated.
I get up and open the door. She looks smaller than usual, if that's possible. She's wearing a grey hoodie, too big for her. It's from the garrison where she used to go to school.
I embrace her. She's tense, but she smells good. Like old books and leaves from Olkarion trees.
She looks up at me with her dewy amber eyes, filled with life, like newborn does in spring.
My hearts melts instantly. She must see it in my eyes, because she smiles and kisses my cheek gently.
"Come on, Rei." Pidge leads me further into my room. We sit down on the floor.
A couple ticks of comfortable silence.
"Are you okay?" I ask. Pidge's face goes from content comfort to nervous.
"I- uh, what? What are you talking about?" She laughs anxiously. Avoiding my gaze, she rubs the back of her head.
"Katie." I cup her cheeks in my hands and force her to look at me. "Tell me what's wrong."
She scrunches her nose in that way I've come to adore. "Make me."
I smile sweetly. "Gladly." My hands move down to her waist as I kiss her. Pulling away enough that our noses don't touch but our breaths intermingle, I look at her.
"What's wrong?"
"It's going to take more than that, love."
The next kiss is deeper, longer. We pull out for breath. She looks at me, her eyes darting to my lips every now and then.
"Will you tell me-"
"Never." She smirks and swings me onto the bed easily. I find myself, eyes wide, under her warm body on the bed.
She kisses me again. I don't know how long this one went on. We frequently stopped for breath, the other waiting hungrily for the kiss to resume.
Our hands moved like spiders, trailing their way across each other's back and stomach, thighs and neck. Weaving a web of intimacy that only we could get caught in.
Finally, we both pulled out. Breathing heavily, we stared into each other's eyes.
"What- about- now?" I panted.
"Rei- I love you- but- no." Pidge responded.
I frown disapprovingly at her. "You know I can tell you're not well."
"Yeah, whatever." Her eyes, surrounded by a warm blush, wandered lazily across my face.
A yell suddenly pierces our warm sanctuary.
"Dinner time!!"
I sigh and watch her get up and off my bed.
"I guess we should go, huh." Pidge says.
"Yeah. I guess." I answer. Throwing on a hoodie comfy enough to rival hers, I follow her out the door.
"I love you." I say softly.
She smiles. "I know."
