Penny sipped her drink on an uncomfortable barstool while her friends were on the dance floor. They were laughing, their drinks spilling in their hands as they wiggled between sweaty bodies. Penny sighed, she was always so exhausted after a week of work. She was often at war within herself choosing between her bed and spending time with her friends. She loved her friends and on weekends when she got to pick the activity was more often than not a board game night in.
"Penny! Come join us!" One her friends yelled as she left the dance floor coming towards her. Penny shook her head, but her best friend Mandi ignored it and convinced her she needed to join them. Penny agreed and let her drink give her the spark to let go and enjoy dancing with them. It was a relief though when Heather broke their groove by announcing she was danced out. The four of them made their way over to a booth in the back, falling into the seats in giggling fits. Heather offered to get them all new drinks.
They started chatting about their love lives, a topic Penny always tried to avoid considering her past, but as girlfriends it was their obligation to be caught up. The four girls had been best friends since seventh grade, their friendships having only a few small hiccups along the road. But after college they had rekindled and ended up living in close proximity of each other in the city that never sleeps.
Mandi, her closest friend had gone on to be a third grade teacher and her choice of outfits easily reflected just that. Heather was following in her father's footsteps by becoming a lawyer and had just gotten her bar results, hence the getting drunk in the city. And Jordan went into Real Estate and was the only reason that they were able to live in the city with affordable rent.
"Kyle says that with the wedding only a few months away he's never been more sure of his love for me." Heather said beaming while the three friends oohed and ahhed at all the right moments.
"So, Penny, how's the love life?" Mandi asked. Penny's heart stopped.
"Oh, you know. I work in fashion so all I meet are eligible straight men." They laughed at her joke, but they'd known her long enough not to let that stop them.
"Come on, when's the last time you went on a date?" Jordan asked, scooting closer to Penny and raising her eyebrows.
"Let's see. Last weekend will be three months, since I stopped trying." Penny said blushing and twirled her straw around her drink. She didn't need to look up to know her friends had disappointed looks on their faces.
"Listen sweetheart, we've been talking." Mandi started.
"We're having an intervention." Heather said.
"I know this guy who I really want to set you up with." Jordan said matter-of-factly.
Mandi interjected, "Except I also know this guy I want you to see. You'd be perfect together."
"So we thought it'd be good for you if all three of us set you up on two dates each, so for the next six weeks you'll have a date every Friday Night. If you haven't found a guy by then, we will never bring it up again." Heather finished.
Penny looked at them all slowly. This deal seemed like it had a catch 22, but then again if she went through with this they said they'd never bring it up again.
"Alright, deal," Penny finally replied, taking a much needed sip of her long island iced tea. This was about to be a mess she thought as her friends cheered.
