Laurence's POV
"Zella!" I whispered loudly, throwing rocks at the window. If I got anymore cliched I'd be holding a boombox on my shoulders. Zella opened her window and tossed her suitcase into the bushes below her, the climbing ever so carefully down the tree next to her room.
She was wearing dark skinny jeans and a black t-shirt that read, "Some girls don't wanna have fun," with her hair in a braid resting on her shoulder. She even had on cute little Converse. She grinned at me and I scooped her up into a tight hug, throwing her over my shoulder and grabbing her suitcase.
I plopped her down into the passengers' seat and she looked at me with a grimace. "You look really conspicuous."
I glanced down at my purple skinny jeans and black Memphis May Fire shirt, then at my neon green Vans. I had topped off the ensemble with my red hoodie and my black beanie.
Zella pouted, and I looked at her with my poker face. "I'm already conspicuous, princess. I'm 'that guy with the full sleeves, huge-ass rose and skeleton tattoos on his neck, tattoos everywhere else, snakebites, long hair, gauges, and OH YEAH, he's about 6'2" and has brown eyes.' I'm about as conspicuous as it gets."
She scowled at me, and I added one more thing to cheer her up. "And I can be spotted being affectionate towards a petite, beautiful, brown-haired, green/blue-eyed girl."
Zella's lips twitched into a smile at that, and I poked her cheek, causing her to break into a grin and giggle. I smiled at that, because damn, she was adorable.
She wasn't even my type. I wasn't a player or anything, but I usually went for the bad girls that drank and did drugs and went to parties. When they found out I wasn't a manwhore they would leave me, because they tended to be sluts.
Zella was the opposite of that. She saved her first time, or at least she tried to. She had only ever drank once, been to one real party, and she has never done drugs.
While we drove, I pulled out a pack of cigarettes. I rolled down the window, then rolled down Zella's a grabbed a lighter. Suddenly I felt the pack being snatched out of my hand. I was about to take them from her to keep her from them, thinking she was going to smoke one, when suddenly she opened up the pack and snapped each and every cigarette in half, throwing them out the window before pulling my lighter and cigarette from my hand and throwing them out the window as well.
I turned to her, pissed. "What the fuck was that for?!?!"
She stared straight ahead, and whispered, "Cigarettes are bad for you."
"Wasting money is bad for you too, princess," I hissed, malice filling my voice. I was going out with the intention the hurt her feelings. Even though I didn't like hurting her feelings, I felt like she wouldn't do it again after this.
Then Zella turned to me. "My brother died from smoking cigarettes, Laurence. He died. Caught his apartment on fire by a not-completely-put-out cigarette. I have bad asthma from his secondhand smoke. Smoking around me causes my throat to close up, and I die." Her eyes had welled up with tears, and my heart began to wrench painfully in my chest.
I couldn't stand to see someone I loved sad. I pulled over, and held Zella to me, whispering soothingly in her ear. "Shh, it's okay. I'm sorry, I had no idea. Don't cry."
Tears spilled down her cheeks, and Zella hugged me tightly. I felt a warm wetness spreading across the chest of my shirt, and I kissed her forehead.
"I'm sorry," I whispered. "Never again. You do have an inhaler though, right?"
I felt her nod against my chest, and I kissed her forehead gently.
"I love you," I mumbled into her hair.
Zella nodded, and that was all I needed.

I stopped somewhere in Arizona. We had been driving for hours, switching on and off, and we were both exhausted. By the time we trudged into the hotel room we had gotten, I passed out on the bed and Zella crawled on top of me, instantly passing out on my chest.
As I looked down at her, her mouth was turned into a slight smile, and she looked peaceful. Zella looked like my princess.
I think it's because she was my princess.
I finally found someone sweet and kind, who could look past my bad boy ways, my horrible past, my tattoos...
Zella looked past everything wrong with me and focused on me.
And for some reason, I felt like that would never happen again.
So I was keeping her around.

Zella's POV
How does Laurence love me?! I'm totally not his type, I thought, my head spinning.
He smelled faintly of mint and candy. No trace of smoke.
No trace of anything but Laurence.
He was the man I loved.
I was gonna be with him for the rest of my life.
That I can swear.
