You flipped up the light switch and watched as the lights of the police station slowly flickered on, illuminating the main workroom. Each of the desks sat abandoned, covered in dust and old, crumbling paperwork. A few old, personal objects, like picture frames or souvenirs, lay scattered across the desk.

You took a step further into the office and started to walk towards your old desk, cutting through the maze of spinning chairs and tall potted plants.

You used to work for the DPD as a detective. You would get called in every other day to investigate homicides and assaults, leaving you to dig through files until you found a lead that would lead you to a criminal. You were a pretty crappy detective, though. You always tried to stop yourself from sympathizing with criminals. It stopped you from doing your job. But there was one criminal - one deviant - that you couldn't resist. His name was Daniel.

Daniel was an android who went rogue after his owners planned to abandon him. He was Connor's first ever mission, and after he got caught, he was locked up in the station's jail. Even though he was a deviant, Daniel was really sweet. You used to sit in the hallway, leaning up against the wall of his cell, and chat with him all day while you worked. It was nice to have a friend in the station, even if he was behind bars. (If it were up to you, you might put Hank behind bars to avoid his snarky remarks.)

Then the revolution shook Detroit. After it was over, the DPD pretty much shut down due to public criticism. The officers who could afford it quit their jobs and moved out of Michigan to find new jobs in other cities. Most of the androids were abandoned or dismantled. Now, the station lay empty, the lights shut off and the doors locked to anyone without access.

You reached your desk and wiped away a layer of dust from the seat of the chair and from the surface. You took your time taking the things you wanted and putting them into your purse. When you were done, you pushed your chair in and walked away from your desk.

I might as well look around one last time, you thought, slinging your purse over your shoulder. I'm never going to come back here.

You stepped past your desk and walked into the back of the station, nearing the interrogation center and the jails. Each location was linked to so many memories - not all of them positive.

You walked past the interrogation room, gazing through the double mirror at the empty chair and table. You distantly remembered standing around the table, shoulder-to-shoulder with Connor, wearing down a witness to figure out information. At the time, it was stressful, but it was your favorite job you've ever had.

You spotted a flash of pale skin out of the corner of your eye and turned towards one of the cells. You walked curiously toward the prison, looking through the glass window.

Laying on the ground inside the cell was a deactivated android. You recognized her from years ago - she was one of the deviants you had captured and interrogated. She had probably been lying there, inanimate, for years now. Androids could only stay activated without oxygen for so long, and since the rooms were airtight, it probably took a couple months before they deactivated.

You were about to open up the door and reactivate her when a realization hit you and left you running. If that android was still laying there, there was a good chance that Daniel had also been locked up. In each room you passed, there was an android lying on the floor, unconscious.

You stopped in front of Daniel's cell, pressing your hands up against the glass, your breath fogging up the pane. Daniel was leaning up against the wall, his eyes closed. His face was flooded a soft pink, probably from  being deactivated for so long.

"Daniel," you breathed, pressing your hand onto the fingerprint scanner. The small pane of glass buzzed as it scanned your prints. The door slid open and you slipped into the room. It was cold inside - the smooth stone walls kept out any heat that entered the station.

You sat down next to him, legs folded, and shook his shoulders. "Daniel!" You said, trying to shake him awake. You brushed your fingers over his LED and watched his pale blue eyes flutter open.

"[Name]?" Daniel asked. His voice was deep and rumbling, as if he had just woken up. You grinned at him and threw your arms around him, squeezing him tight. Daniel leaned forward and returned the hug, rubbing your back through the wool of your sweater. You both quickly pulled back and smiled warmly at one another.

"Let's get out of here," you said, standing up and holding out a hand to help Daniel off of his floor. He took your hand and stood up, and as he rose to his full height he towered over you.

"Let me get everyone else out first," you said, walking away from him towards the other cheeks. Daniel nodded. He stepped back and leaned against a desk, watching you open and shake awake each of the androids. They gathered in a group at the far end of the station, and chatter quickly filled the room as soft pink rays of light broke through the windows.

You waved goodbye to them and turned around to walk back towards Daniel. He was smiling, and he reached out to hold one of your hands.

You both walked together towards the entrance, your linked hands swinging between you. One of his hands was more than enough to cover yours so that your hand fit snugly in his.

You opened the door for him, and as you stepped out into the outside square, Daniel squeezed your hand. You pulled your hand away from his and hooked an arm around his waist, squeezing his hip softly. He snorted and wrapped his arm around your shoulders, pulling you to his side and kissing your head as you walked.
