Once they had all cleared it up with their parents, they all decided that the best time to go was on the last day of summer break. Why not? After all, it would be the last thing they did for the summer, which would make it memorable whether they wanted it to be or not. Their last day of school was that same weekend, on Sunday. They decided to leave the night before, which was that same night they got the offer. They wanted to get there as early as possible (or late, in this case). So, without hesitation, they all packed up and started the long drive in Ryan's van.
As they drove down the old, empty road, it quickly got dark. Ryan looked at the clock and was surprised it was only 6:00 PM. "It's only 6....Why is it so damn dark already?"
No one answered as he soon realized why. The trees were so overgrown they blocked out the sun almost entirely. Obviously no one had bothered to even trim them for quite a while. "Jesus. This makes me feel like some kind of bug or something." George said. The others nodded as Ryan tried his best to navigate through the increasing darkness.
As if by magic, a shadow seemed to materialize on the road in front of Ryan. He couldn't get a good look at the person, but they seemed to be holding something in their hands, something two-handed. He couldn't quite see what it was before he swerved out of the way, causing the van to veer off the road and into the surrounding forest. The van rolled violently down the hill into the forest, momentum pushing it forward quite a bit before finally stopping when the van hit a large tree. Everyone started to cough as smoke filled the air.
"Everyone OUT!" Alyssa screamed as the others frantically pushed open their doors and races out. They hadn't got very far before there was a deafening explosion as the car burst into a huge ball of flame. Everyone dove to the ground, barely escaping the scorching flames. Once it was relatively safe to get up, they all stood. Ryan brushed off his shorts and cursed.
"My fucking car! You've got to be kidding me...!" He screamed. "Now how are we supposed to get out of here?!??"
Joey put his hand on Ryan's shoulder. "Hey, calm down dude. We probably have reception here." He checked his phone and frowned. "Ugh. Of course we don't."
"Well, the mansion probably has a phone. I mean, it HAS to have a phone, right...?" George asked. Everyone nodded uncertainly. "We should continue. It can't be too far from here." He said.
Ryan nodded, taking the lead. It seemed like hours to them before they finally saw a large, looming shadow in a clearing. Ryan, followed by his friends, raced towards it and stopped to look at it. "Well guys, welcome to our temporary home." He said.
