calum hood a.u. short story
2:07 AM
Lying on his side, Calum held a blank stare at the alarm clock that sat on his nightstand. Each minute ticked by slower and slower, but Calum still couldn't manage to get his eyes to fall shut. He began to restless; his body tossed and turned until he was in a comfortable position facing away from the clock.
In the midst of him trying to shut his eyes, and have them stay that way, Calum's phone vibrated among the nightstand. Rolling over onto his side once again, he fumbled his hand on the surface of the table until he had a grasp on the object. The bright light blinded him momentarily, but he quickly adjusted his eyes to read the text sent from his girlfriend, Lena.
Lena: hey cal, you up?
Calum quickly sat up in bed with his eyebrows knitted together in confusion.
Calum: yeah. what's wrong?
He waited a moment for her to reply.
Lena: nothing i just wanted to talk to you.
Calum frowned at the screen. Lena wasn't the kind of girl to text her boyfriend in the middle of the night because she missed talking to him, she's the kind of girl who will text her boyfriend in the middle of the night because something isn't right. He knew better than to believe that last text. Within a few seconds, Calum was holding his phone close to his ear waiting to hear her voice on the other end of the line.
The rings broke off, and before she could utter a hello, Calum spoke. "What's wrong, Lena?"
"Nothing, Cal," she responded in a quiet, shaky voice.
"Lena." Calum sighed.
Lena didn't say a word. The line was quiet for a moment, and then, she broke down.
"Lena, where are you?" Calum asked, worried.
In between quiet sobs, Lena replied, "In my bathroom."
"What's wrong? Please, just tell me." He waited for her to calm down, or at least gather herself for a second.
Lena tried to cut her cries as she drew in a deep breath.
"Can I come over?" Calum asked.
Taking in a shaky breath, Lena replied, "Please."
As soon as he was given the okay, Calum tore off the bed sheets and slipped his shoes on. "Don't move, and don't do anything stupid. I'm coming over right now."
"Okay."
Calum shoved his phone down into the pocket of his sweats and headed over to the window. With a swift lift of the window, Calum was free to step out into the yard. "And I thought having a ground-floor room sucked," he spoke quietly and took off in a jog towards Lena's house.

His jog slowed as he saw her house come into view. He tried to hurry across the yard towards her bedroom window without causing any sort of attention at this hour. He peeked over his shoulder several times while he tapped on her window, again thankful that it was on the ground-floor as his was. After a minute of getting no response, he put a little force on the window in hopes it was unlocked. It was; with a heave of his body upwards, Calum teetered on her windowsill, still trying not to bring any attention from inside the house or from any neighbors.
