i sat soundly in the little hospital room beside my nana. she looked so fragile and weak on the bed, surrounded by tubes and needles attached to her. my eyes began to well up with tears. why was it me? why was my life like this?  i bent over so my face was close with hers and gently kissed her on the head, feeling her soft, aged skin against my lips. i wiped away a tear from her forehead and sat down at the end of her bed, determined to stay there until she was well again. i picked up my book from beside the seat and began to read the first few sentences until i was interrupted by the sound of shoes walking down the hallway to room 108.

"hi, i'm looking for mrs blossom? mrs rose blossom?"

"are you family?" inquired the suspicious nurse at the desk.

"no i'm not. but i'm a good friend of her granddaughter, cheryl blossom, and she could really use some company right now."

the nurse eyed me.

"please?"

"go ahead, it's room 108, just down the hallway."

"thankyou so much," i said gratefully and began walking down the passage slowly.

102, 104, 106, 108. i peered my head round the corner and sure enough, there was cheryl with a book in her hand, and her nana in the bed across the room.

"so this is where you've been hiding."

"toni," she smiled softly,  looking up and wiping away a tear, hoping i wouldn't see, "how did you find me?"

"it took me a minute, but then i thought," i began, looking at nana rose, "this is exactly where i would be if my nana was in hospital."

"this is exactly where i would be if my nana was in hospital."

i began to cry again. this was so sweet of toni to come and find me in the hospital, but i was so tired of all this work with my parents. no one loved me. i was alone. i had no true friends and i knew my mother was out to get me.

"cheryl?" toni said, coming closer and bending down slightly, "what is it?"

"i'm so exhausted. and toni i am here for my nana but not in the way you think," i sat up cautiously, "i want to make sure my mother and uncle claudius don't come to hurt her, and finish what they started when they pushed her down the stairs."

toni sighed and bent down fully, placing my hands in hers.

"cheryl, i promise that no one will hurt her. and i will stay with you all day and all night to protect her with you." she comforted.

i smiled, letting my hands rest in hers.

"can i get you a chair?" the nurse said, popping her head in the door.

"yes please," toni said, taking the chair from her and placing it down beside me. she took my hand again and rested it on her lap.

"you're going to be ok."

and this time i believed her.
