Two weeks passed.

Joe reached the hospital after work like he has done every day for two weeks. Lauren was still asleep; Julia was sitting in the seat Lauren's right with a computer on her lap she seemed to be writing.

‘Hey.’ Julia smiled

‘Hi. Has she…’ Joe didn’t have to finish his sentence to know the answer. Julia’s face fell.

‘Joe, they are doing the best they can.’ Her voice was gentle.

The best they can. They are doing the best they can…

‘…But what if it’s not enough? What will I do then? It has been two weeks now! How can I be expected to live without my best friend? Without the love of my life? Without Lauren, I may as well be dead myself!’ Joe’s voice was shaky, just under a yell.

‘Joe. Listen to me. It won’t do any good thinking negative about this. I know she is the last person that deserves this and I myself would have done anything to stop this from happening but it did. And just because she isn’t awake yet, doesn’t mean she will be gone forever.’ Joe said nothing. He tangled his hand within Lauren's once more. He rubbed his thumb over the back of her hand as he sat back in the familiar chair that he has been sleeping in the past two weeks.

Hours passed. Julia had gone home leaving him alone with Lauren. Joe was drifting to sleep when he felt something. Lauren was squeezing his hand back, weakly. But still force was there. ‘Lauren…’ Joe felt a smile spread across his face. His heart skipped a beat to see her wrinkling her nose and trying desperately to open her eyes, without succeeding.

Joe felt a tear run down his cheek. ‘Can we get a doctor in here? Quickly!!’ he shouted. He sat back in the chair, hand still intertwined with hers. ‘Lauren. It’s okay, everything is okay. It’s me, Walker. You’re safe, now.’ Joe kissed the top of her head, catching a tear from her cheek as he pulled back. Joe stood up as a bunch of doctors came rushing in telling him to get out.

‘Okay, okay I’m going! Lauren, I’ll be back soon, okay?’
