Cassie:
The lies we've been fed our whole lives are enough to make us hate the world. My favorite and least favorite lie are the same, forget about Santa Claus or the tooth fairy. This lie is something more deep and meaningful than materialistic things. How many people have told you that school days are the best days of your life? Or that your teenage years are the happiest days of your life. It's all bullshit.
It's bullshit. Every single bit of it is a lie, maybe some people were blessed enough to enjoy their teenage years but I wasn't. Home was supposed to be your escape from school unfortunately for me school was my escape from home. I hated both my home and school life but I'd take a day hiding in the school library reading about a dream world than stuck at home afraid to scrape my knife and fork off my plate. My teenage years have been filled with lies and tears and I assume the few left will be filled with the same.
I was currently on my lunch break in the library like any other day but today was different somehow and I couldn't quite figure out why. My ability to concentrate and get lost in an imaginary world was almost gone, I was lightly skimming words and not absorbing them like I'm used to. I sighed and flipped the book shut.
"Nothing interesting?" a voice asked startling me. I placed my hand over my heart after jumping a little.
"You scared me" I whispered without looking up at him.
"Sorry. So are you new around here?"
"No, I've been here for the same time you have" I said rolling my eyes.
I was being a hypocrite rolling my eyes, I mean I was practically invisible to the school but the boy sitting in front of me wasn't. He was the one all the girls were gaga over. Not me though, I didn't even know his name.
"So you know who I am then?" he asked. This time I looked into his eyes, I knew him all right he was stunning with his dark hair and green/blue eyes. Not to mention his cheekbones and jawline basically his whole bone structure. You had to be insane if you didn't think this dude was attractive.
"I've seen you around"
"What's my name?"
"Ugh I'm going to go read something else" I said getting up to go find another book.
As I sifted through the books on the tall bookshelf I saw one that caught my eye. Red Tears. I couldn't reach it but stared at it for a while before searching for a new book.
"Here" he said holding 'Red Tears' in front of me.
"Thank you" I whispered since we were still in the library
"I'm not giving it to you until you tell my name"
"You don't know your own name how the hell am I supposed to know it too then" I shot back as a smirk formed its way onto his face.
"I do know my own name"
"Then why are you asking me?" I asked before walking away and making my way towards the door. I wasn't in the mood for jerks like him and if I couldn't get peace in the library then I could go elsewhere.
"Avery Whitlock. You've heard that name before you've had to" Avery said
"Yeah I have"
"See I knew it"
"I have heard it when you said it there now apart from that I've never been interested in wasting time to hear people talking about an Avery Whitlock" I said rolling my eyes
"Wow"
"What?"
"I knew your name yet you didn't even know mine" he said looking genuinely hurt
"People know my name? I'm invisible in this school. HEY! You asked if I was new you're up to something"
"Uh no I'm not. I just was making conversation but you never have spoken to me before could you blame me for thinking you're new" he said defensively
"Yeah okay I would love to stay and chat but I have things to do" I said walking away.
"Wait up"
"Yes Avery?" I asked through a sigh
"You're Cassie Keaton, aren't you?"
"That's me." I said before walking away
When I wasn't hiding out in the library I spent my time with my only friends in this school. They all hid out in the art department since they were all artsy people bar me and I generally liked spending my free time reading so they didn't mind but they always loved when I decided to join them.
"Cassie" Megan squealed excitedly. Out of all of the small group of friends I had Megan was definitely my closest friend, she got me and I got her.
"Hey" I said giving everyone a small wave
"What are you doing here?" Cole asked with a smile
"Oh you know I was getting tortured in the library so what better place to go than come here"
"Are you okay? Who was torturing you?" Megan asked concerned
"Some guy Adam Whitlock"
"It's Avery Whitlock" Jazmine said with a serious expression on her face
"What is it?" I asked worried
"Stay away from him" Jazmine warned
"He knew my name"
"You're his next target" Becca said with a sad smile
"Next target?" I asked feeling lost.
"I am going to go show Cassie what you're all talking about." Megan said linking arms with me as we walked out of the art department.
You know that feeling at the pit of your stomach when you just know something is wrong? Ya well I currently have that right now and normally when I do have that gut feeling usually it is right. My eyes wondered round the school as I helplessly followed Megan outside until we came to an abrupt stop.
"See those girls" she said gesturing to a bunch of beautiful girls underneath a tree there was about five of them. I nodded "And those ones" Megan said pointing to the bunch of popular girls there was so many of them that it was hard to count them all.
"Yeah"
"They have all been Avery's victims before and you are his latest victim"
"How do you know I'm his next victim?"
"People like Avery don't just talk to people like us"
"Nobody's like us" I corrected with a roll of my eyes
"We are still people Cassie. Anyways they are all people he has dated and broken their hearts"
"So he's a manwhore? I'm really not interested in him"
"That's not the point, Avery and his friends target girls to make them fall in love with them so they sleep with them then leave them and break their hearts"
"So he wants to sleep with me?" I asked shocked
"Yeah well one of his friends has probably choose you but that is the aim to win"
"So it's like a bet then?"
"I'm not sure that's everything I know" Megan said
I looked around all the girls the popular girls seemed to be getting on with life happy as larry but the other girls the ones who were under the tree seemed sad and broken. I felt for them and needed to do something to help these girls that's when a grin spread across my features.
"Why are you smiling?" Megan asked
"I'm going to break his heart"
"What?" Megan asked with wide eyes
"I'm going to beat him at his own game!"
