LUCAS WOKE TO a strange sound ringing in his ears. He opened his eyes, wondering what was making the noise. What he saw was strange. There was a small black box on the table next to his desk, and Laura standing next to it, smiling at him.
“Do you like it?” Laura asked, “I forgot to get you one at the store last night so I brought you one. It’s called an alarm box. It was recently invented by some of our magic blacksmiths. All it is is a solid box that has magic in it so that it makes an annoying sound at a certain time to wake a person up. Get dressed, the assembly is today.”
Laura touched the box on its top and it went silent. Lucas bathed and dressed quickly while Laura waited outside, clearly impatient. They then went to the dining hall where they
sat at a table with Laura’s friends – Chester, a girl named Bianca, a boy named Joshua, a girl named Marzelle, and a relatively young boy named Harris. Harris looked to be at about the age of twelve. He never spoke unless he was asked a question. He had brown hair, green eyes, and a small thin nose. He resembled somewhat the girl named Bianca. She seemed to be the same age as Laura. She also had green eyes, but they sometimes seemed to change colour. Her nose was thin and small, just like the one Harris had.
Chester was tall and muscular. He wasn’t very intelligent and seemed to live in his own world. He had black hair and grey eyes.
Joshua had brown eyes and curly blonde hair and was of average height. Marzelle had brown hair, brown eyes and was tall and thin.
“So, what was your first magic, Lucas?” Bianca asked him.
“I’m not sure. Mistress Colitz said something about pain ... ?” Lucas ventured.
Bianca paused, then laughed,“Yes, your first magic was Pain, and I came back from the dead.”
Everyone laughed except Lucas.
“Please Lucas,” Laura chuckled, “do you really believe that old bat? She once said that someone had the magic of Pain when Jeremy Lancer stubbed his toe. She’s so desperate to find Corruptive Wizards that she sometimes accuses people of unlocking Pain and not telling her! Besides, Pain is a corruptive magic. Only Corruptive wizards use corruptive magic – but you’ll learn this all later. But seriously, it couldn’t have been Pain.”
“Why is she so desperate to find someone using Pain?” Lucas frowned. He knew there had to be a reason for someone to become so frantic.
“Something about Corruptive wizards usually using Pain before other magic,” Chester answered.
A loud bell rang three times, signalling that all pupils were to go to the assembly room. People stood up all around and started to leave the room.
“Lucas,” Laura said, “come with me.”
Laura led Lucas to a small door farther down the hall. It appeared to be the backstage area. Already there was Mistress Colitz, an amber haired boy, and Adrian. Adrian didn’t acknowledge them when they entered; all he did was stare at the floor.
“Good, we’re all here,”Mistress Colitz said, “Now we can start the assembly.”
Mistress Colitz walked through a small door, and just before she closed it, a puff of smoke exploded from behind her.
“So that’s how she does it,” Laura realized with a slight laugh and shake of her head.
“Does what?” Adrian asked.
