“I WILL DO anything for you.”
“Anything?”
“Definitely!”
“Would you betray your friends?”
“If it would please you.”
“Would you kill them?”
Jean hesitated, he didn’t want to kill anyone, but he was in love with her and would do anything to please her, “Yes.”
Laura smiled, satisfied, “Good. I have one more question. Would you serve the Dark Lord, Soulgiver?”
Jean frowned. He had often heard that name. Jean preferred to judge things only after he had encountered them and so did not give any thought to titles such as “good” and “bad”.
He replied, “If you so wish it.”
“Good. You now fall under the protection and rule of the god Erebus. You will obey Him and you will also follow my orders. The god Erebus rewards those who come into His service. I hear that you have the Fire ability?”
“I do.”
“Well, Jean. How would you like to improve on that?”
“How?”
“Well as I’ve heard told, no mage has ever had the control over magma or lava. How would you like to be the first?”
Jean’s eyes glinted with interest and expectations of power, “I would like that very much. But how could such a thing be possible?”
“Oh, we servants have our ways.”
Laura was glad. The love potion had worked. She had gotten the idea from Jean, when he had surprised her by telling her that he loved her a few hours after she had first met him. Jean would feel as if nothing about him had changed, except that he would do anything for her. Laura thought it quite fun.
Jean frowned, “What of Adrian. My abilities will still not be able to compete with his.”
“Adrian? You mean the annoying mage who came to The Wall with Lucas? The one who has taken Lucas as his Ward?”
“Yes.”
“He will be dealt with.”
The truth was, Laura was bothered by Adrian. Jean had told her about him; how he had powers over all the elements. She had already made an enemy of him, but she now realized just what she had done. He was a dangerous enemy.

Lucas found another note on the desk in the library. It had said that it was important he stayed at The Wall, at least for a little while. He also needed to watch for... something. He had showed it to Adrian who had been a little disappointed; he wanted to see his old town again.
Lucas had spent the remainder of the trial period in the hall before the library – he had started calling it the Great Hall –wondering about Homeless. The old beggar had caused great disquiet in Lucas. The first moment in Homeless’ presence he had done something that no wizard had done before: cast the wizard-sight spell – not to mention teleportation. Homeless also seemed to have been waiting for him.
