DAMIEN HAD SPENT all their money on the river boat and magical trinkets which they didn’t need. The man, Maliman, had been very helpful – a bit too helpful. Then the Elder had taken them to the merchant houses where they spent the remainder of their money that they had gotten from the sale of their horses. Damien had bought for himself a new wooden cane to walk with as well as a ring that would “let you understand the words of the trees” – It did no such thing. But Damien said it looked pretty so he bought it. Then they had bought some liquid that would “give your sword a brilliant shine” which Lucas refused to use – Adrian did not refuse and used it on his bjeu. And the last few anits they had was spent on food for travelling. Luckily Sarah had been saving her money and brought it with her.

Lucas and Sarah were in the one canoe, while Adrian and Damien were in the other. Adrian and Lucas were paddling with the oars. They had left an hour before sunrise. They had been going for an hour. The sun rise made the river glow orange and set the trees alight with false fire.

“How is it your friend carries a bjeu, weapon of the mages?” Sarah asked Lucas.

“He is a mage. He has finished his training.”

“I know little of the customs of other people,” Sarah frowned, “but should he not be protecting a Ward?”

            “He is.”

             “The old man?”

             Lucas laughed, “No! Me, silly.”

Sarah blushed, “Oh, of course. So you .  .  . you are a wizard?”  This man was very interesting...

“Mm-hmm. I am a wizard, you are a witch, Adrian is a mage, and Damien – well he’s Damien.”

“I see. Quite an odd company we must appear to be.”

“Quite,” Lucas smiled and Sarah’s heart jumped.

They rounded a bend in the river and Sarah saw the next village. “There is a village up ahead. We must stop and ask for safe passage. Otherwise they will attack.”

Lucas steered the canoe closer to the other one and repeated the message. “What would happen if they did not grant us safe passage?”

“They would probably kill us. The only reason they would not grant us safe passage was if you were thieves or murderers. You’re not either, I hope?”

“What do you think we are?” Lucas’ eyebrow rose.

“Both. But it’s not my judgment that decides in this matter.”

             “You think us thieves?”

“Where did you get money from if you had only just completed your training in magic?” She wanted to know the answer to this question, for it would shor whether he was a thief or an honest man.

“Damien was not in training. Did you forget to include him?”

Sarah took a long glance at Damien, “He looks a beggar. He could be both murderer and thief.”

Lucas laughed in his head, thinking the idea ridiculous, “Then why did you come with us? Surely you would want thieves and murderers to die?” He raised his eyebrow in mock question.
