LAURA HAD SAID much the same thing as Lucas had. This would be the day the War of the Plain, as it would be called in the future, would end. She wasn’t sure who was loyal to her and who was not – perhaps winning this war would help her think more clearly. She did not want any more traitors like Kaz’ak. She wanted this, and she was going to have it. The Earth would be hers to rule.
Her army marched behind her. On the other side of the river stood Lucas and his army. She spotted Jesse there as well. With Laura walked Jean and Gadlel. She watched as Adrian watched Jean next to her.
She was still so confused. Why didn’t Lucas love her? Because she had tried to kill him. Because he loved another. Because... she wasn’t good enough. How could she show him that she was the best for him? Perhaps if she abandoned her master and – no! Her love blinded her. But still... it was Lucas.
Lucas watched as the New Order army approached. He was glad Jesse was healthy and fit for battle – he wanted to show Laura that he would not be bargained with. She had chosen this war; he would not end it by some trade. Lucas would show her that he didn’t need her. And that his broken heart only made him stronger. If it hadn’t been for her, this war would never have started... and he wouldn’t have found Sarah.
The two armies stopped on the opposite banks. They armies stared each other down, tension building as their leaders stepped forward once more.
“You know you could end this all, Laura,” Lucas told her, “You don’t have to suffer for what Erebus is forcing you to do. The gods gladly invite you to join them – to join me.”
Lucas could see Laura was unsure of herself, but still she answered, her voice hard as if she had resigned herself to what she was about to say, “I can’t Lucas. This is my destiny. I was born to rule. I am Death’s Ambassador.”
“Jean,” Adrian said, “remember who you are. You’ve been spelled by her! You aren’t evil!”
“I love her,” Jean replied, tilting his head to the side as if Adrian’s words made no sense.
“No you don’t! Think, Jean, think! You don’t love her! Remember, Jean. Who are you? To where do your loyalties lie? You are not evil; you’re my friend.”
Jean looked confused, and something within him broke, “Adrian?” he asked, his eyes wide. But whatever had broke mended itself and he said with a dead voice, “My loyalties lie to my mistress. You are not my friend.”
Adrian looked torn, “Please, Jean, Try to remember.”
Sarah spoke, “Laura, Lucas loved you. Did you love him? Did you really? For if you did love him, you would not be doing this right now.”
“Of course I loved him! I still do! Who are you to know what I would do for love? What I do, I do for Lucas, and a better Earth!” Laura shouted in rage.
“I thought this was for your master, Erebus?” Sarah asked with a glint in her eyes.
Laura looked a bit confused, “This is for Erebus... Isn’t it?”
Gadlel roared, “They try to confuse you, mistress! Kill them now, before you betray our master!”
Laura looked at Lucas, “Death always prevails. You will die too someday, Lucas. Death will always win.”
