Inhaling the bitter sweet scent of coffee beans, Chiara takes her time sipping from the cup; the brew easy on her tongue.

Her mind was wandering nowhere specifically and she had her notebook laid flat across the table in case she spontaneously became inspired.

"Look stop calling me alright I said I wanted thirty minutes of moi time, got it?" slamming her flip phone, an unfamilar girl with a short black bob huffs and takes the seat across from Chiara without thinking to ask if it were taken.

"Hey, Hey waitor can I get some service over here?" The girl calls out with an impatient flare.

Scrunching her nose, Chiara shifts her gaze towards Michele and turns up her nose to the stranger despite trying not to be so obvious about it."Michele."

"Hm?"

"The server's name is Michele."

"Well Michele sure works slow..." The girl mumbles as she  finally gets the waiters attention; quickly ordering a latte with double everything and a burger; and even complaining when Michele tries to create small talk with both her and Chiara.

After some time a freshly brewed cup was placed in front of the stranger who begins to drink without so much as a smile of gratitude.

Biting her tongue, Chiara huffs."You'll burn your tongue if you keep drinking so fast."

Without missing a beat, the stranger glances up with her hazel eyes."Meanwhile you're letting your coffee freeze to death."

There was a pause of tension before the strange grunts.

"Gosh why is the food taking so damn long? seriously do I have to go back there and flip the patty myse–" Forcing her chair back and causing the wooden legs to scrape against the wood flooring, the stranger pushes her hands on the table, accidentally hitting her coffee mug and spilling the scorching hot liquid over surface.

Jumping up just as coffee prepared to drip into her lap, Chiara immediately grabs her phone to save it from getting drenched."Hey!"

"Ah damn it–here," Grabbing Chiara's notebook, the stranger lifts it above the spillage and gets to work soaking up the muckiness with a towel that Michele had rushed over.

Once the spill was cleaned, the girl hands Chiara back her book, noticing the the quote scribbled on the front page.

"Hm? you know about E.P Lawrence?"

Voice shaking with a hint of agitation, Chiara accepted the book with a mumbled thanks."Yeah..."

Brushing her black hair back behind her ear, the girl gives an awkward smile."He's such a freaking underrated author, but I recognize his quotes anywhere."

"I know, it sucks that he don't get any appreciation," Turning over her book in her hands, Chiara allows herself to smile a bit.

"yeah If they ever had a book signing I would die, but no one has ever even seen his face before; thats what drives me crazy."

"Well I heard that Michele knows more about him than anyone, he once got me a copy of E.J's book a month before it's release." Now fully engaged, Chiara chuckles at the memory of when Michele first handed her one of his book's a month in advance.

"Seriously?"

"Seriously, I could call him over if you want, he could tell you about E.J. and how they know each other."

"Yes!"

Both girls now smiling; Chiara waves Michele over and the three begin to talk, causing the stranger's cold presence to warm up and a more friendly atmosphere form—making the girl forget about her hunger and almost disappointing her when her meal finally arrived and she had to stop talking to eat.

"Thanks for the meal...and by the way, the names Mercy."

At first Chiara doesn't seem to take well to Mercy , Shes always complaining and is such a busy body. They don't seem to share any similarities at first glance.

But as time goes on and situations force the two together, she soon learns that she actually has more in common with Mercy than she thought and we witness them having a laugh together.

Likewise we can see such contrast in Mercy and Chiara that it makes you wonder exactly how they fit together at all. Chiara is thoughtful and polite while Mercy is quick and loud.

The trick to making them connect actually isn't much of a trick at all! All you have to do is give them all a similar goal or interest.

It doesn't have to be anything big, literally just pick one or two things that they both like or have them working towards similar goals.

Why? this creates a bond that doesn't seem overly forced while keeping each character's individuality and bold personalities.

Have you ever heard of the Venn Diagram? Two circles that overlap over common traits? It looks like this.

Imagine that circle A and circle B are two characters and shading inside each circle is their interests. We can see that only a small portion of both A and B's interests or "goals" overlap.

But thats enough for us as writers to manipulate and create a relationship from them.

Really is that simple.

Another good example is when you make a friend with someone. You usually don't know much about them at first but then you both connect over one thing that you both are passionate about and soon a friendship ignites—or atleast a relationship of some sort is formed.

So for Chiara and Mercy they both shared a love for an underrated author and bonded over that despite getting to a rocky start eariler in the day. this then opens up for them to talk and they find out that they actually share quite a few similarities.

yet in the end Mercy is still the same loud, fast paced and cranky New Yorker that we originally met and Chiara is still the slow, soft spoken small town girl who likes nature walks.
