Chapter Three
*Carah POV*
I looked at the clock to see what time it was. It read 8:26 a.m. I sighed and leaned back in my sit as Masky kept driving. We hadn't spoken since we left the gas station, and Masky looked more on edge now. I leaned my seat up and watched as trees passed us on both sides of the interstate.
"Masky"? I said not really knowing what else to say. I just wanted to talk. "What happened to Jeffery"? I said while I watched the trees pass.
There was a long silence. "He became his true self". Masky said sounding nonchalant.
"What does that mean? Like was there something wrong with him before"? I asked turning to look at him.
"No, but we all did the same thing. One way or another we all became who we were truly meant to be. So now we are free". He said sounding like he knew a lot about the feeling.
I sat there quiet for a long time. I thought about why Jeffery would even want to see me after all this time. I had no explanation though and it looked like Masky wasn't going to give me one either.
"What happened to you"? I asked making him tense.
He sat staring out at the road quiet. I finally gave up since he wasnt talking and turned around sighing until Masky said something.
"I was seventeen when Slenderman found me. He told me I was a Proxy. He said I should be grateful. I would forever live with him. Well until I die at least." He thought for a moment and I didn't dare say anything. "I was grateful at first, I mean, I thought I was special. Like the only one in the world to make Slenderman happy. Then I found out I'm not the only one. I'm more like the billionth one. But I got over it. So now I'm just doing what he tells me until I die". He said he was over it, but something in his voice tells me other wise. I didn't say anything after that. I was quiet as I turned back around and looked at more trees. Of course I had more questions I just knew those were for another time, not right now.
______
I saw a big sign coming into view. I squinted until we got closer so I could read it.
Welcome to Oklahoma
We had made it to Oklahoma but I still didn't know where we we're going exactly.
"So how much longer"? I said sounding bored.
"I don't know, about 30 minutes". He said not making eye contact.
I saw a another sign that read:
Claremore: 20 miles
Tulsa: 40 miles
"Claremore? I mean I've heard of Tulsa but Claremore. Never heard of it". I said turning to look at Masky.
"Don't worry it's a really nice town". He sounded annoyed. So I closed my eyes and waited. By the time my eyes opened again 30 minutes had went by. I saw a turn pike up ahead and waited. Masky went through because I guess he had a pike pass. Too the right was a QuickTrip and to the left a Kum&Go. He turned Left. I thought he might go to Kum&Go but what happened last time I don't think he wants to. I don't either. We were on a highway again, but this one was smaller and the road definitely needed to be redone. We made our way into the downtown part. There was old antique stores and such. I saw a sign the said Will Rogers Blvd.
We came up a big hill to a college named RSU. Most likely Rogers State University. Then we curved right and came to a stop light. It quickly turned green on que and we kept going down a straight road. We traveled for about five more minutes when Masky turned right. The street sign said Jumpers Rd. I looked straight to see a dirt road. The trees grew up on both sides and curved over the path making a tunnel almost. I turned the air off and roled down my window. The warm air felt nice on my face. I closed my eyes and stuck my hand out of the window. The air wrapped around my fingers then kept moving. When I opened them again I looked over at Masky.
