Blinky stood motionless, shielding Flint and Amber from James's gun once more. The man was disheveled, hair mussed and clothes singed. Apparently, whatever other trolls Jim had managed to find had set the place on fire in attempt to help flush out as many humans as possible, making it easier to rescue the trolls.

"You had something to do with this, huh? You did! I know you did! People are dying out there!" Blinky backed even further away, pressing the children into the corner, as far from the gun's dark muzzle as possible. "James, look at you. You are driving yourself insane. I have had nothing to do with this, how could I? I have been locked in here the entire time." Blinky tried to keep his voice even and calm, a difficult task with Amber crying from terror behind him.

James blinked slowly, and Blinky began to think that maybe he was starting to get through to him.

Then Jim burst through the door and the moment was lost. James turned his head around, glaring at his son while keeping the gun focused on Blinky and the whelps. "Kind of you to join us Jim. You're just in time to watch your surrogate father die!" He cackled madly and pulled the trigger, pumping several sloppy shots into the wall next to Blinky's face. This time the gun wasn't just tranquilizer; it was huge caliber rounds, meant to kill.

The briefest pause was all Jim needed to grab the gun, wrestling it from James's hands as more bullets exploded deafeningly around the room. The trollhunter roared and swung the butt of the gun into James's face, making the insane scientists collapse forwards. "That's for ditching my mom and I- not that we ever needed you."

Blinky rushed to Jim in a second, hugging him and closely followed by Flint and Amber. Jim's eyes saddened as he looked at them and saw the features of their mother, knowing she lay dead in trollmarket. Blinky nodded once, and Jim knew that he had figured it out, and that everything was going to be alright.

The trolls were free, the scientists scattered, the lab destroyed. Watching it burn was beyond satisfying, even though it would never make up for what was lost. But the trolls could rebuild; it was already beginning as Jim saw Blinky introducing the numb troll whelps to Aargh, explaining in a low voice what had happened, and that they would be staying for awhile.

A new day, a new dawn had begun; new love would always heal old wounds.
