This story was actually used in the 1980's to scare girls out of getting their ears pierced. A young girl desperately wanted to get her ears pierced, but her parents refused. She argued, saying all the other girls in her class have pierced ears. After some time, her parents caved in and allowed her to get her ears pierced. They gave her a bit of money and instructed her to get it done at a jewelry store. Instead, the girl kept the money and pierced her ears herself. She had her closest friend help her with it as well.
They heated up a large, thin needle and stuck it through both of her earlobes. It was a bit painful but in the end she was bearing earrings on her ears. She delighted in this.
However, a few days later her left ear grew quite itchy. During her break time she made her way into the bathroom and checked her ear. It was red and inflammed, yet she kept itching at it.
Upon looking closer, she discovered a white string sticking out of the hole in her ear. She pulled it out, although there didn't seem to be an end to it. After a few minutes there was a long white string hanging out of her pierced ear. Finally, she snatched a pair of scissors and with one snip, everything went black.
She was rushed to the Emergency Room. A doctor examined her, and after she told him her story, he stood, puzzled.
"I'm sorry to break this to you...but you will be blind for the rest of your life." He told her. "That wasn't a white string, that was your optic nerve."
