I stand in the middle of the empty hallway watching Valerie run to the cafeteria. I wipe the bead of sweat from my forehead. What the hell just happened? Her saying no to me definitely was not part of the plan. I can't mention this to Patrick when he asks about it. "Hey, Vin how's the game going? Any touchdowns?", Pat says coming up from behind me. "Its more of a fumble", I mumble under my breath he looks at me confused, "Yes, uh yeah definite touchdown. Easiest game I've ever played". He pats me on the back and I flinch a little, "Glad to hear you say that because I have another proposition for you". We walk out of the building and head to the nearest pizzeria to have lunch. "You should ask her to prom, damn that will be interesting". He says looking as if this is very entertaining. "I don't think that's a good idea, Pat, what if some who really likes her wants to ask her out?". He scoffs, "She'll never know because to her it seems that you're the one who really likes her", he says patting my back. I never though pretending to like someone would stress me out.
Patrick and I walk to the door to the school and wait outside for the teacher to let us in. "So tell me a little bit about you and Valerie, how did you meet her?". Great I have to go down memory lane. "Uh well we live across the street from each other, and we've always had the same classes but we never talked even though our parents have been close friends". We see Valerie and her friend Thomas walking to their next class and Valerie makes eye contact with me and I instantly feel a pain in my chest. "You okay Vin, what wrong?", Pat asks me. " I just felt a pain in my chest". He laughs, "Is it the feeling of guilt, or jealousy or you falling in love". I shake my head, "No, heartburn". His smile fades into a disgusted expression before he lets me head to my next class, which is study hall. I get the library and sit at the table behind Valerie and Natasha's table. I get a head start on my homework, but my attention is taken away when I see Valerie get up to use the restroom.
I look back to make sure she is completely out of sight before getting up and sitting across from Natasha. " Can I help you with something?" Natasha asks coldly. Damn, I can't tell if Valerie gets her attitude from Natasha or Valerie is rubbing off on her. "I need your help with something". She puts down her notebook and crosses her arms, "What's in it for me?". Of course, there always has to be something I can give in return. "If you help me get to know Valerie a little better, then I'll introduce you to Patrick". Natasha was like a cat, her pupils got huge when she saw or thought of something that made her happy. I had a small bit of hope until she blinked and shook her head. "Sorry but no can do, if you want to learn more about Valerie then you have to make your own time". I pinch the bridge of my nose before I hear a cough from behind me. I slowly turn to see Valerie standing over me. "Now you're flirting with my friends Romeo?" I got up from her chair and let her sit down as I went back to my table. Then I notice her close her Chemistry notebook signaling that she finished her homework. She then gets up and goes to the science section of the library. I slowly follow her trying not to make too much noise that would scare her. But I didn't have to, she already knew I was behind her.
