I stared at myself in the mirror. My hazel orbs studied every article of clothing that graced my body— it was my first day starting as a secretary at Cayuse Corp. and everything needed to be perfect. I decided to wear a navy blue long sleeved shirt, paired with a collared white blouse underneath; a knee length, dark pencil skirt covered my porcelain legs.My outfit was complete with a pair of sheer black pantyhose and matching onyx stilettos.

Stilettos? Pantyhose? You look like a whore. My conscience barked.

I sighed and awkwardly shifted. I did not wear heels often, but I felt extremely professional in these shoes— plus, new job, new shoes, am I right?

My light, coffee colored locks rippled down my back like a waterfall that ended around my mid back. I fumbled with a strand in my left hand; I gently twisted the hair between my thumb and my index finger. It was a nervous habit I had developed over the years— I could not help it.

"Adeline?" A feminine voice called out from the adjacent room. Soon after, my roommate, Jennifer Hanson, tumbled into my room with a gaping smile on her face. "Happy first day of work!"

"Someone's in a good mood," I chuckled while turning around to meet her line of sight.

"Well, yeah," she gleamed. "According to this article I read, being surrounded by others with overtly hyper actions dissolve nervous feelings," the blonde's smile grew. "So I'm overtly hyper for you."

Immediately, I walked up to her and wrapped her into a tight hug. She shifted within my embrace— Jennifer was a good head shorter than me, but in my opinion she was much prettier. Her golden locks could rival the shine of the sun and her gentle bluebell eyes always shimmered.

"Thank you," I mumbled. My heart ached— I did not deserve such an amazing friend.

"Hey," Jennifer giggled, "if we stand here all day like this you're going to be late, you know."

"I know, I know," I sighed. "You're just an amazing friend. I couldn't help myself."

"Don't mention it."

Jennifer then slithered her way out of my grasp. After freeing herself, she smoothed out her dress. "I have a doctor's appointment this afternoon, but you're not coming home till late so that should be fine." She concluded.

I nodded and reached over to grab my purse.

"No breakfast today?" The blonde asked in a concerned tone.

"No breakfast, I'm too anxious." I muttered, my words light and shaky.

"Okay, but we are celebrating over wine when you get back." Jennifer gave in, not wanting to push any further. She hesitantly lead me to the apartment door before saying her goodbyes.

"Good luck, Addie." She flashed one of her signature, goofy smiles.

"Thanks, I might really need it." I returned the smile before heading off into the buzzing city of New York.

Tap, tap, tap, tap.

My onyx stilettos echoed against the concrete.

I felt like a grade school teacher strutting through the halls— my shoes continued to make satisfying clicks. Thankfully, our apartment was street side, meaning the walk from our building to the street was extremely short. Plus, I did not mind the sound of traffic, so the location was perfect.

After softly sticking two fingers into my mouth, I whistled. Almost immediately, a bright yellow cab wildly rushed by and came to a halt right in front of me. I hastily climbed in and buckled my seat belt.
