It was like time had slowed down to accommodate for my senselessness. The gears in my mind shifted and whined as I attempted to process new information.Werewolves— no, 'wolf-borns' exist.
Elijah and Kathleen were living, breathing proof of that.
With their existence came tribal hierarchy, an omnipotent Moon Goddess, fated mates, and new found dangers.
And I, a human, was being thrown right in the middle of it.
I furrowed my brows as I felt my mouth curve upwards into a grin. A nervous giggle escaped my lips; I couldn't help but stifle a laugh, for laughing was my primary coping mechanism.
The expressions on both Kathleen and Elijah's faces grew cold.
"I think you broke her," The blonde wolf reluctantly grinned; her plump lips then faltered into a light frown.
"This wasn't my fault. You're the one who pushed me to tell her," Elijah narrowed his fierce, golden eyes at the female.
Kathleen rolled her orbs in dismay before swiftly approaching my bedside. "Hey," she mumbled as she grabbed my hand— I could feel a wave of warmth radiating from her skin. "It's okay. I know it's a lot to take in, but you're going to be just fine."
I flashed her a weakened smile, but my heart kept stammering within my chest. My eyes slowly traveled back towards Elijah, whom was watching us carefully. His orbs were filled with concern and annoyance once more; he stood in complete silence, as if he was scolding himself for being too forward.
After taking a few more deep breaths, I collected myself and summoned the courage to carefully raise my gaze to meet Elijah's. A sudden pang of guilt struck my stomach.
I didn't want him to regret being frank with me. And truth be told, I wasn't scared as much as I was intrigued.
Sensing that Elijah and I needed to talk, Kathleen left the room. Cold air brushed against my newly exposed hand, causing a shiver to creep up my spine.
"Elijah," I quietly hummed out his name once Kathleen closed the door behind her.
His clouded eyes lit up immediately as they landed upon my face. "Yeah?" He sleekly muttered.
"This is all so crazy," I flashed him a weak, crooked smile. "I really don't know what to think, but my intuition is telling me to trust you, for now."
For a split second, relief traveled across his face. With a hand in his locks and his eyes now glued to the floor, he started speaking in his usual, husky voice.
"Adeline, I'm honestly just as confused as you are— if not, more," he mockingly chuckled to himself. "Your scent. Your eyes. Your voice. Your being— it's all intoxicating for both me and my wolf. I've never felt like this before." Elijah scoffed before pausing to glance back up at me. "I've never felt so attached to a human."
My heart skipped a beat. Was all of that really true? The more I thought of it, the deeper the blush forming on my cheeks became. I, too, couldn't deny the attraction; his voice was enough to make my hair stand on end. I just didn't realize it until now.
His dark eyebrows were pressed against his eyes in a confused fashion. Sighing, he continued, "I don't know how to deal with this either— that's what I'm trying to say."
My nervous eyes softened as I felt the weakness in his once proud voice. We were both confused, and only time would give us the answers we craved.
"I want to learn more about you," I abruptly blurted out.
After letting out a small sigh, Elijah's lips twisted into a smile. "You do, do you?" He slightly teased. "And why's that?"
"I'm involved with this now, might as well know what I'm getting into," I bit my lip. The way I had worded my remark made it sound like he was forcing me into being with him— which was a joke. I wanted to think I had a choice in the matter, despite the whole 'soulmates' thing.
And for now, I simply wanted to learn more about him before I made that choice.
A scowl formed on Elijah's face. I could tell that he wasn't too keen on my snarky comment; the guilty feeling from before had quickly returned.
After a moment of silence, I parted my lips to reassure him, but my cellphone's ecstatic buzzing ruined the moment.
"Ah, uh, that's probably Jen," I spoke as a calm grin spread across my face. She's probably worried sick. My hazel eyes then wondered around the room, looking for the vibrating device.
"Jen?" Elijah gracefully pulled an alerted iPhone out of his pant's pocket. "A friend?"
"Best friend," I corrected.
He quietly nodded before answering, which surprised me. But I didn't argue.
"Hello?" He spoke collectedly into the phone.
Man, could I get used to that voice.
"Elijah Cayuse," he paused to glance over at me. I felt goosebumps form where his golden eyes focused. "Yes, she spent the night at my place. I couldn't leave her at the club in the state I found her— I hope you don't mind."
I mean, he wasn't wrong. But thankfully he made it sound like I was drunk, not bleeding to death. Jeniffer would have freaked out if she knew.
"Yes, that will work out quite fine. Thank you."
After hanging up he phone, the dark haired man turned to face me. A playful smirk danced upon his lips.
"Your friend will pick you up tomorrow, young doe." His charming voice was smooth, like molasses. "But for now, you can stay here."
'Doe'— the word slid off of his tongue like velvet. I didn't want to admit it, but something about it made my heart flutter. Insult or not, I secretly loved it.
Elijah's smirk suddenly deepened— it was as if he could hear my heart thumping within my chest.
Another wolf perk? Probably. So much for it being a secret.
"Wh-Why tomorrow? She could come get me today," I stuttered.
Elijah shifted his weight from one foot to the other. "And see you in body cast with a broken ankle? I think not. Plus, we should really talk more." His lips formed into a flat line.
"It's not like I'm going to be better by tomorrow, though," I frowned. I was all for talking more about our situation, but his reasoning was way off; today or tomorrow, I'll still be in a cast.
He rolled his flaxen eyes before extending his arm and adjusting his sleeves. Lifting his bare wrist to his mouth, Elijah sunk his canines into his tanned skin; the man didn't even wince as vibrant blood dribbled down his arm.
What the hell was he doing?
My jaw slightly dropped as I watched him eagerly. I didn't know what to think or even how to process what had just happened, but my eyes never left his.
Elijah then took a couple of steps forward before offering me his arm. Drops of blood messily oozed from the fang indentations on his skin.
A horrified look traveled across my face once I realized what he wanted me to do. "No, I'm not drinking your blood, are you crazy?" I mumbled, still astonished.
"Fine, suit yourself," he scoffed before taking in the crimson liquid himself. But instead of swallowing it, Elijah bent down and captured my lips with his.
