Chapter twelve - Thought wrong

Avery's P.O.V

It's now been a week since the night I shared with Tom and I haven't seen him since. I have seen him from a far at work but we haven't talked at all since last weekend, plus work has been so busy as a lot of deadlines are coming up and our work dinner is tonight, as I type up a document I get a notification telling me I have a new email, I click the notification and read the email.

"Dear Staff,

Just a reminder that our work dinner is tonight at the same hall where the charity ball was held – the address is attached at the bottom of this email for those who need it.

The dress code is formal and a reminder you're allowed a plus one, the dinner starts at 5:30pm sharp.

I get my phone out and text Ellie to remind her of the dinner. I then go back to my documents and work for the rest of the day.

Luckily today was a half day so we all had time to get things prepared for the work event tonight. Which I was more than grateful for because the day seemed to go by so slow, before leaving I go and grab a bottle of water from the break room as I am looking in the fridge I hear someone walk by "Okay, I will pick you up at 5pm, okay bye" I look up and see the back of Tom walking away from the break room and into one of the many offices on the floor.

I get in the elevator and head home so I can start to get ready with Ellie who also left her work early today.

As we play our getting ready playlist through our speakers we add the final touches to our look. I am wearing a rose gold/pink dress that is floor length and ties behind by neck, I've also paired it with a black faux fur jacket.

Ellie is wearing a black dress with a sweetheart neckline that has a lawyer of a mesh material over it which has black stars that have glitter on them.

"Are you excited?" I ask Ellie as we make our way downstairs turning our music off as we leave. "I am actually and this time I promise not to drink too much" she says giggling "you?" she adds "I am actually, it should be fun" I say "do you think Mr. ceo will sit with you?" Ellie asks "most likely not, he probably will sit with all the other workers that are higher up like managers and what not" I reply as we get in my car. "Plus I haven't actually spoken to him since Saturday afternoon" I add "I'm sure you two will find some time to chat tonight, plus you look amazing so he won't be able to resist you" she says laughing "thank you, you look beautiful too" I say as we drive out of the garage and start the car ride to the dinner.

We soon arrive at the hall and make our way up the familiar stairs. The doorman is the first person we see "Hello ladies, you look wonderful tonight – names?" he asks "Avery Johnson and Ellie Williams" I reply "oh yes there you are" he says after seeing our names on the list "enjoy your night" he says opening the door and letting us through, we both say thank you and make our way to our table.

We are seated in the middle with a bunch of random people who I don't know. "Have you seen Tom yet?" Ellie asks quietly so the other people on the table don't hear, I look around the room once more "nope not yet", we start to chat about everything and anything really whilst we wait for the dinner to begin "yeah so I think James is going to take me to his cousins wedding but it's out of town so we will probably – what the fuck" Ellie says suddenly. "What?" I say with a confused look on my face, I turn and look in the direction Ellie was looking in and see Tom standing across the room his arm around some lady I've never seen before.

I feel my stomach drop as I see them standing together, as she whispers into his ear causing him to smirk I look away. "Oh Avery, I'm so sorry" Ellie says rubbing my arm "you know if this wasn't your work event I would be over there asap and pour the nearest drink all over him" she explains, I give her a half-hearted smile "thank you Ellie" I say quietly. "How could I be so naïve" I say thinking out loud, "don't blame yourself for this Ave, his the stupid one" she says "how about we leave this stupid dinner of stuck up rich people and head home so we can have a movie marathon and eat all the junk food we have" she suggests "that sounds wonderful" I say. We both get up and leave the hall together with our arms linked as we head home and forget all about Tom and tonight.
