Prologue

I face the dark blackness of the tunnel, the sunlight behind me penetrating very little. I look at the green clearing behind me one last time. Large reddy-brown mushrooms dot themselves near the edge, where tall evergreen trees protrude from the ground like giants. The golden sunlight shining on everything making it look exactly like an enchanted forest from a storybook.

Turning back around I look again at the black tunnel, hesitating to go in for fear of the monsters that lurk in its shadows. A large gust of wind suddenly comes whispering out of the depths of the black, blowing my white cotton dress behind me. Along with the wind came a voice, a deep velvety voice filled with plea.

"Come, come to me, come into the tunnel, come," the voice whispered.

Following the mysterious voice, I take my first step into the tunnel. Immediately cold washed over me, seeping into my bones. I almost stop, but the voice comes again, louder than before, in another gust of wind. My feet follow the voice, through a mind of their own; for the further I go into the tunnel, the more evil I sense lurking near me.

Soon all is pitch black, and I cannot even see my feet below me, let alone the tunnel walls. Then a strange flickering orange light appears ahead, I turn the small corner to be confronted by a small lantern. Next to the lantern however is a boy they looks no more than 18, he has black shaggy hair falling into his piercing green eyes. His skin seems to glow slightly, but that may be because it is so pale. When he sees me a smile comes over his face, but the beautiful sight soon turns into a worried frown.

"What are you doing here Kira?" The boy asked his voice thick with worry. "You should not be here, if Father finds you he won't hesitate to kill you!"

I stare at him, I do not know him yet he seems to know me. Confused I open my mouth to ask who he is but that is not what comes out.

"Alec, I had to see you, I can't stay away any longer," my voice says filled with longing, seeming to know full well who this boy is. Alec grabs my arms and pulls me into a tight hug, I rest my head on his chest, and he leans his cheek on the top of my head.

We break from our embrace when a loud booming voice carries itself down the tunnels passageway.

"Alec, you will get away from that immediately!" The voice boomed, not long after it a man appeared near the edge of the light. From what I could see, he looked quite tall, badly sunburnt with his red skin, and his black eyes seemed to glisten with hate.

"I won't Father!" Alec said reaching for my hand, and gripping it tightly. "I love her!"

Still gripping my hand, Alec stands in front of me, blocking my view of his father.

"You betray me? You are a disgrace!" Alec's Father yells. "I will kill her for your insolence, you will stop going to that human school and you will rule the kingdom with the wife of my choice!"

Alec is shoved into the rocky wall of the tunnel, by what seems like nothing, and blacks out. I stand there unprotected as a large black ball of fire is thrown at me by Alec's Father. I scream as it hits me, the burning flames enveloping me, until all I see is black.
