The bright morning sun caressed Jade’s face waking her up slowly but surely. Slowly opening her eyes and blinking away the discharge to clear her vision she looked around. Unaware of her surroundings her eyes widened and she bolted up from where she was seated. She looked around frantically becoming even more frazzled by the minute. Suddenly remembering how she had gotten there, she calmed down. Her clothes seemed to have been dried by the sun’s warmth; she was thankful for that.
Upon remembering the map she had put away for safe keeping she patted her chest in an attempt to find it. She found the piece of paper; although it was damp, the illustration and calligraphy were still decipherable. Knowing that the map was in one piece she was able to take on the other problem at hand, getting of the forest. Now that her surroundings were illuminated by the morning sun, it was easier to see where she was. Looking straight ahead she saw that her house was no more than 10 steps away. “You have got to be kidding me” she thought with annoyance.
She all but ran through the green barrier that stood between her and her home. Running to her front door she banged on the door. This woke up her mother who had fallen asleep on the couch. “Jade” Her mother said subconsciously. Realizing that it was Jade she jumped out of the couch and rushed towards the front door. Seeing Jade standing there unharmed immediately brought tears to her mother eyes.
“Jade honey are you okay?” her mother asked her before enveloping her in a huge bear hug. “I’m fine mom.” she answered her mom reassuringly.
“Where were you?” she then asked demanding an answer.
“I was just walking through the woods and I kind of got lost so I had to stay there until morning”
“What were you doing in the woods?, never mind that just thank God your safe”
“Yeah and uh mom could I stay home from school today I’m kind of tired”
“Sure I got to get ready for work so just take a shower and go up to your room”
“Thanks and ok”
Believe it or not that was the longest conversation they had since her father died. Jade slowly padded up the staircase and towards the bathroom. Her mother left for work while she was in the bathroom. The hot shower soothed her aching back that she had developed from sleeping on that tree trunk for the whole night. She stepped out the shower and walked towards her room door. After towel drying herself she put on some sweats. She lay down on her bed and looked up at the ceiling replaying last night’s events in her head continuously.
She sat up and fished out the map out of her pocket. She looked in her drawer for her little black book and put the map in there for safe keeping. She then lay down again. She started to ponder on weither or not she should go back into the woods. She decided that she should so she prepared herself for the long walk.
She stood up put her hair into a high ponytail and put on a sweater and some black jeans and she picked up a flash light just in case. She got out her little black book and exited the room the keys and blue print were still in her jeans pocket from last night. She went to the hamper and found them. With all the necessary tools in hand she walked downstairs. Stopping at the front door she put on her combat boots which were mud stained from last night’s adventure. Making sure to lock the door this time she walked outside.
Making a u turn she stopped in front of the forest again. She remembered the instructions from last night so she walked forward fearlessly. After a couple of steps she saw the boulder. Stopping right there she turned on her heels and took 30 steps east again mentally counting her steps. “Thirty” she said aloud reaching the last step. Taking her book out her back pocket she looked for the next landmark. It looked like two trees that were bent into an “X” shape.
“That’s not gonna be hard to find” she thought as she kept on walking. Soon enough she saw the trees about 5 feet away. Next on the map was something that appeared to be a deep hole. She walked on for what seemed like ages. Finally she found the edge of the hole. If she hadn’t stopped there she would have fallen into it. She carefully walked around the hole and went to the other side avoiding falling in.
She took out the map again and she was overjoyed with what she saw. “50 steps to the west and X marks the spot”. Mentally counting her steps once again she stopped at forty because she could see the house from where she stood.
It was no mansion but I was quaint in an intriguing way. It looked about two stories high and about 50 years old. It didn’t look like cabin but more like a house in the olden days. She just stood from afar admiring the house and taking in every last bit mentally noting every crevice window and door there was on the outside. After sufficiently soaking up the view she approached the front door. “X marks the spot” she said with a genuine smile spreading across her face.
She took the set of keys out of her pocket and tried most of them in the lock until a small black key opened it. She put the keys back in her pocket and opened the front door. It was kind of dark so she looked around for a light switch. Upon finding it she switched it on. The chandelier that precariously hung from the ceiling sparked and then the light bulb blew. She got out her flashlight and shone it around what seemed to be the living room. It was decorated with an antique mahogany sofa. There was a glass coffee table with wooden legs a glass vase in the centre.
She shone the light forward and she saw spiral stair case that supposedly lead upstairs. It sort of rickety but she ascended them nonetheless. Finally on the second floor she once looked around for another light switch. She found them and tried them all but it was a wasted effort. Walking down the hall she entered the first door on the right.
