Chapter 4:
You know how some days start off really great, but turn out to be very, very bad. Well, today's one of those days. And you know how people say there's a difference between 'bye' and 'goodbye'. Well, they're right.
---
We wake up around 10:00 and get ready to go to a movie with our friend Angel. I didn't bring an overnight bag, so I borrow some of Tessa's clothes. I put on an off-the-shoulder tropical yellow shirt, and slip on my jeans. I put on my Birkenstocks and we head out.
In the car, I pull out my aux cord and plug it into my phone. I slowly turn and smirk at Tessa.
"Gabi, what are you doing?"
"You'll see." I smile.
I search through my playlist and play some rap. Tessa hates rap.
"Gabi no! I'm not listening to this!" She tried to grab it but I throw it in the backseat before she can change the song. "Oh my gosh Gabi." She pours. I sing along loudly and make her listen to it all the way to the theater.
We finally get there, and we meet Angel in the front and buy our tickets. We head inside and I buy a cherry soda and Watermelon Sour Patch Kids. That's really the only candy I like. Tessa and Angel get a big bag of Oreos and some popcorn to share. I don't need to buy that many snacks because I always sneak some in my purse.
We go into the theater and since we're there early, the lights are still on. As we're walking in, I notice a familiar face. "Matt! Hey!" I shout. He smiles and waves us up to the 5th row where he's sitting.
"Hey guys!" We all sit down end up talking for 25 minutes before the movie starts.
———
Halfway through the movie, Tessa gets up to get more popcorn.
"I'll go with you." Matt offers.
Angel and I wink at each other and laugh as they go down to the lobby.
———
After the movie ends, my phone buzzes and I look down to see a text from Adrien. I can't help but smile.
Adrien: Hey, Beautiful. I have something planned. Meet me at The Fitted Fillet in 25 minutes ;)
Me: Nothing crazy I hope.
Adrien: Not telling :)
Me: Okay dork I'll see you there.
Adrien: I can't wait.
"Oh my gosh." Tessa rolls her eyes as she reads my texts.
"Can you drop me off?" I laugh.
"Um, no, actually. Matt and I are going to dinner." Tessa and Matt shyly smile at each other and I wink at both of them.
"I can take you." Angel says.
"Really? Thank you so much. But could we stop at my house first so I can change?" I ask her.
"Yeah, come on, let's go."
———
We get to my house and Angel waits in the car as I run inside to change. I search my closet and find maroon dress with long sleeves and a few sparkles here and there. I goes to right above my knee and then flares out. A slip on a pair of red heels and pull two thick strands of my hair into half up-half Down sort of style, and secure it with a Zarconian clip. I put on red lipstick to go with my red eyeshadow, change into dangly earrings, and head out to the car.
"You took forever." Angel complains.
I roll my eyes. "Just drive."
———
After what seems like forever, we finally get to the restaurant. I thank Angel and start to head in. When I open the door, the hostess seems to know exactly who I am, and says, "Come with me Ms." She leads me through the restaurant. I look down, and surrounding my feet are hundreds of rose petals. They're my favorite. (Cliché I know.) There are candles all over the place, and finally we get to the table. Adrien's standing there holding a bouquet of roses, (Again, my favorite.) wearing a white, long-sleeve polo shirt, black khakis, and a tie.
"Wow. This is amazing." I say pulling him into a hug. "You did all this for me?"
"Well I originally planned it for someone else, but you're here now so I guess." He jokes. I roll my eyes and he pulls my chair out for me. "You're beautiful."
"Thank you. I tried to get a little dressed up for this." I smile.
"No, I didn't say you look beautiful today, I said you're beautiful. There's a difference." He's so serious it's almost funny.
I try to say something but all I can do is smile.
———
The dinner went so well. It was almost too good to be true. Which apparently, it was. Because just as I'm thinking this, Alya walks in.
Adrien's in the bathroom, so I have to deal with her alone. She struts over to our table and we roll our eyes and groan. "Hi loser! Having fun on your little date?"
"Yeah actually! But you wouldn't know anything about that." She looks stunned for a second, but then bounces back.
"Well you know it's not gonna last. Once he realizes you're just a brunette piece of trash, he'll realize that he needs someone better. Me." She smirks.
"Alya you're not better than anyone. You're literally not even better than an actual piece of trash."
Alya leans in close to my face. "Stop acting like you matter. Stop acting like you're good enough. You're not. And you never, ever, will be." And just as she finishes speaking, Adrien stands in front of the bathroom, listening to the whole thing. He storms over and pulls out his phone. "Um, what are you doing?" Alya scoffs. Adrien just keeps typing. And I know what he's typing.
"Adrien no. I told you not to, it'll just make things worse, stop!" I try to grab his phone but I'm too late. He turns his screen around and looks Alya dead in the eyes.
"Sent." I've never seen him this angry before.
"Wh-what do you mean, sent?"
"I just told the whole school about your brother. You know, the one in the asylum." Alya looks utterly terrified. "Yeah. That one." Alya runs out of the restaurant.
"Adrien!" I scream. "I told you, I asked you, I made you promise not to do that! You promised me!"
"I had to. She was never gonna stop."
"It doesn't matter. You broke your promise. Goodbye Adrien."
"Wait what do you mean goodbye?"
"I mean I can't be with you if you're gonna break your promises. I'm sorry."
I run out before he can object. And I can't believe I just did that.
