On the 31st October 1981, The Potter family survived the killing curse thrown by Lord Voldemort.
Peter Pettigrew was sent to Azkaban after attempting to pass the blame onto Sirius Black. The Potter's were safe, Sirius was innocent, and Voldemort was no longer a threat.
However, whilst the drama in the Wizarding world was happening, on the outskirts on London, DawnKale was born. She was the outcome of a one night stand between James Potter, who at the time was broken up with Lily, and Sarah Kale.
After some deciding Sarah choose to keep it a secret for the child's safety.
So, whilst James Potter lived his happy life with his wife and his growingly famous son. Sarah and Dawn Kale lived a normal life surrounded by no harm.
Unfortunately, that all changed when Dawn entered her fourth year at Hogwarts.
