Change is something that happens when you're making things better. You change for the benefit of yourself and others. My brother made me feel like this change won't be good but I hoped it would be.
The change was when the twins decided to share a room because my brother was uncooperative.
The change was when we spent money building a new room for a boy I was still yet to hear the name of.
The change was when we stopped buying as much meat because he was a vegetarian.
The change was when the social services agent showed up at the door to inspect the house.
The change was when Dad B thought about getting a job because now we have a fifth kid.
The change was when Dad A and Dad B had a fight over money.
The change was when my brother stopped speaking. Tyler refused to smile or show any emotion of sort. It killed me not to see him smile or laugh.
The change was when the social service again showed up again with a teenage boy in tow.
It has been two weeks since the dinner and now this strange boy is showing up on my doorstep with the wicked witch of the west.
Her nose was huge, she looked stuck up, she always ignored us, children. I hated her.
But the boy who was standing behind her didn't look that bad. He was obviously Mason's little brother but there was nothing little about him. He was my age. He had long tousled brown hair like Mason and he was tall. But unlike Mason he was skinny. Where his brother was muscular and broad-shouldered, this boy was deathly skinny.
Dad B calls us children downstairs and we gather in the living room. The witch and boy still by the door. I didn't see too much of the boys face seeing as he seemed very interested in his shoes at the moment. But the Witch seemed proud to be giving the stink eye at every single one of us kids.
"Kids, this is Rowan. Like we talked, we will be fostering him until he is fit to leave." Dad B says.
Rowan. It was a name unlike any other, I had never heard a name like that before. I decided I liked that name.
"Well all of the paperwork is done so I will be on my way. I do not want to have to come back to take him to make sure you don't cause issues." She says generally not to anyone particularly. And with that statement, she leaves.
Us kids are dismissed while the Dads talk to Rowan. And I can't help but stare because I've never seen anyone quite like him.
I went up to my room, thinking of the boy who was so close yet so far, hoping to figure out what made him how he is.
