Chica POV
Dad brought me to the park today. I jumped around on the floor when he told me and he had a hard time putting my leash on, but I was so excited, I couldn't help myself. I hope he wasn't too frustrated with me.
We're in the park now, and he told me to go run around and play with the other friends in here. I saw a few of them wagging their tails at me and I ran over to them, making sure I was still in my dad's line of sight, but he was already on his phone, smiling again, so he couldn't really see me. I wish I could meet whoever it was that made him smile like that.
The lady in the picture. She seemed nice. I always wished every night before I went to bed that one day I would find her and bring her to my dad somehow. He deserved to be happy. And if the pictures of the lady named Ally made him happy, then maybe meeting her would, too.
"Chica! Yo, come over here let's catch up!" Dobby, a rottweiler that I'd played with last time I was here, called out to me. I immediately ran over.
"Hey, Dobbs. Long time no see. How's Alistair?" Alistair was his dad, like Mark was mine. He was nice, at least that one time that I met him months ago.
"He's fine. His friend's staying at his place for a few months. Business thing. She's nice. She gives me nugs. She actually buys me my own box so I don't have to share with my dad."
"Ooh, so you're about to have a new mom soon?"
He shook his head at me. "They behave like family, but not like a mommy and daddy behave. They don't love each other like that. Ooh! There she is now. And she bought me froyo! Bye, Chica! Ally!!!" Then he took off running.
Ally? My ears perked up. Could it be? Same Ally? Maybe? I looked over to where Dobby was running and I saw her. The lady in the phone. Ally. She looked like an angel, smiling and giving Dobby his treat. She was prettier than in Mark's phone. And I took off running, too.
Dad was going to be so happy.

Ally POV
"You're spoiling my dog," Alistair pouted. "He's gonna be heartbroken when you leave and go back." I looked at the sweet rottweiler in front of me, licking away at his frozen yogurt. And he looked at me the same way he looked at Alistair, possibly with even more fondness. "He already likes you more than he likes me."
"You speak as if I'm leaving tomorrow, Alistair. I'm leaving in five and a half months. That's plenty of time. And that might not even be permanent. I might move here for good if things go well with this assignment. And if that happens, I'll visit you two all the time, you'll practically be begging me to leave."
"You know you can stay with us, if you want." I beamed at the offer. "Even after you come back, if you come back. I love having you there. It's like our college days, but better. We haven't seen each other all that much since graduation, and having you around makes me realize that...you're family. You've always been family. To me. And now to Dobby."
"I'll take it under consideration," I joked. "But really, thank you for the offer. I appreciate it. You're family to me, too." No, we never fell in love, even back in college. But it always felt like we were the siblings we never knew we needed in each other's lives. And now it was like we really were.
"Ally, there's a retriever coming straight for you." I turned around in time to see the beautiful dog running towards me and jumping. Luckily I was able to put my arms forward and catch her. "I think Ally made a new friend, Dobby," Alistair said in a teasing tone.
"Hello, you beautiful creature," I cooed at the retriever. "You're absolutely majestic." She barked at me. Then I looked into the dog's eyes and I felt as if...as if I knew this dog somehow. "Alistair come here." He did. "Look at her. Doesn't she look a lot like Chica?"
