The Call

"Rise and shine, sleeping beauty!" Zayn's soft voice butted into my dreams. I smiled and rolled over, thinking it was all just a dream. It had all been a wonderful dream.

My shoulder was gently shaken and I waved them off. I tried to scoot further away from the person when my body knocked into a warm solid wall. I blinked open my eyes to see a perky Niall lying on my bed.

"Bloody hell!" I screamed. I jerked my overly big, "I love Gimli" shirt over my shoulders and near past my neck. My head whipped around the room to see every one of the band standing or sitting on my bed. "What in Middle Earth are you doing in my bedroom with me?!"

"You're really cute when you sleep." Harry smirked and reached for my hair. I angrily smacked his hand and self-consciously tried to give a boost to my bed-raggled brown corkscrews.

"Again, what do you think you are doing in my bedroom?!" I glanced at the clock and groaned. It was near 10 AM. By now, I would be working out with my coach.

"We thought we were waking you up. You've been sleeping for the longest time, so we decided to wake you up." Liam played with a stray piece of string in my comforter.

"You want me to fix you breakfast, don't you?" I shook my head and groaned.

"Well, we just thought... Yes." Niall caught a rouge curl and began twisting it around his finger, making it bounce.

I rolled my eyes and waved Harry, Liam, and Niall off my bed and wrestled with the sheets to get out. I finally got out and went to the bathroom to quickly brush my teeth.

Not even bothering to change, I slipped on a pair of fuzzy socks and left for the kitchen with Zayn, who waited for me.

After an hour, a buffet lay in front of the boy band. Waffles, eggs, sausage, chocolate scones, bacon, French toast, a mixture of potatoes and tomatoes and mushrooms, and lots and lots of tea and orange juice. Everyone filled up and ate around the giant dining table.

Laughter and the clatter of silverware was enough to make a girl wish the moment to never end.

I leaned back from my eggs, bacon, and French toast and just watched. It reminded me of my own family. I gave way to a small smile. After excusing myself from the table, I placed my dishes in the sink and quietly slipped away.

I all but sprinted to Louis's room. I 'borrowed' his laptop and ran to my room. After locking the door, I opened and it hummed to life.

After a quick search on Skype, I finally found my mom's address and called it. It would have been about 5:30 PM in America. She would have been home from work by now.

Two calls later, she finally picked up. The look on her face changed so quickly. From raw pain to surprise to relief.

"Steph? Baby?" She began tearing up. I began to cry as well.

"Mom! I'm fine. I'm fine," I watched my tough mother bawl and it broke me. I reached to the screen and traced her familiar features. Her curly brown hair-much like my own-streaked with gray was stuffed into a messy bun. Her bright blue eyes and laugh wrinkles. I had her small nose and freckles. I missed her so much. "I wasn't kidnapped, if you're thinking this a ransom call." I weakly laughed.

"Baby, where are you then? I've been so worried." She reached out, as if to try and touch my face.

"I'm in the UK, Mom. In Great Britain. In One Direction's house." Her look of disbelief surprised me, because she knew I almost never lied. "I'm not lying, Mom! Do you want proof?" She uncertainly nodded. I told to wait and I opened the door. Five boys fell into a heaping pile on the floor. I grabbed Harry-not too gently-by the ear and dragged him to the laptop.

After sitting him down in front of the camera, I spoke to my mother; explaining how I came to be here.

Soon, her disbelief faded away and was replaced with concern.

"But, how did this happen? To you? To...them?" Her uncertain gaze switched between me and Harry. I knew the others were standing behind me, but I was only looking at my mom.

"I'm not sure. Isn't Doug Campbell working on a teleportation device?" I vaguely remembered her talking about Doug's experiments.

"Honey! That's need to know information. And they don't need to know!" She looked pointedly at 1D.

"Mom! I'm stuck in a house of boys with no girls. And besides, they don't have enough brain cells to tell anyone about this," My arms were punched by multiple teens and each of them got an ear flicked.

"Of course, sweetie. Um, yes. Dougie is working on...that. I belief that he moved on to human experiments last week."

"Mom, Dougie?" I raised my eyebrows at my very single mom. Dad had never been in the picture. Apparently, as soon as he had learned that my mom was pregnant, he disappeared.

"Doug. Douglas!" Her virtual face became red as she blushed.

"Uh-huh," I didn't even bother to hide the disbelief in my voice. "Well, did his experiments work?"

"Yes, I belief they did. But, what I don't understand is how it happened to you when you were at least five miles away from GW in Einstein. You were in Einstein, right?" It was my turn to blush. I had recently developed a...habit of driving to Bellevue to see my Grandpa any time of the day or night.

I have always had a close relationship with my mom's dad. He was especially there for me as a father and a bounty of advice about boys. He was the one who barely managed to salvage what was left of me after my backstabbing ex-BFF stole my three-year-boyfriend. Without him, well...I don't want to think what I might have done.

"Yes, Mom. I was at home that night. Gramps was too tired from his old people marathon to deal with me," I explained. "Shouldn't you be asking Doug how he somehow transported me?"

"Yes, of course. I'll call him tomorrow and ask. Tonight, he'll be sleeping. I should be, too. Tomorrow is a big day. The General is coming to inspect projects. I need to get my babies ready." My mom was in charge of avian human development. So, she raised kids with bird like-wings. Being a mother, she treated the kids like her own and made sure they knew everything that was happening to them and nursed them through the pains of having wings. She even sometimes brought them to our house so that they could experience the 'real world' and a 'real teenager'. They were all sweethearts and were happy to be experimented on.

Weird, I know.

"Ok, I'll take a hint. Go to sleep. I love you." I kissed my fingers and pressed them against the screen. She did the same and we watched each other for a moment.

"Honey, before I go, could I talk to the boys for a moment." Oh, no. That smile. That creepy, knowing smile.
