Chapter 6: Sapphira

The young woman sighed with relief as she filled in the last of her paperwork, white hair tied neatly out of the way. Last form signed, she stuck her fountain pen in her pony-tail and grinned cheekily. Sure, she was worried; it wasn't everyday supernaturally intelligent seven (soon to be eight) year olds called her from halfway across the world to ask for her help; but seriously? A chance to meet both her idols at the same time? Of course she was excited, even if it was marred by the reason they had to meet.

She got up, papers in hand, shoving the sizeable stack into the startled face of the office aide as she practically bounced out of her office. She'd been planning on heading to Japan anyway; she had family over there; and had been perfectly fine with using up her month's holiday to do it, so she was practically ecstatic to get a call from the Edogowa boy.

After all, due to the child's involvement with certain international crime syndicates, (she had a cousin in the FBI who sleep-talked in Latin. Sure, it was a dead language, but still! Any member of her side of the family could understand it. Yes, even her arrogant, foolish baby brother.) she was able to reclassify her trip to Japan from holiday time, to actual business. Which meant her little friends could come with her too. And the best bit was she got paid for it!

FBI, CIA, PSB, Interpol.... the Edogowa boy had them all dancing to his tune already, even if Interpol only listened because they'd been threatened by world renowned mystery author Kudo Yuusaku. The young woman had only met the little boy once before, and she'd been terrified into awe. Her brother had slept through the whole flight, so obviously he'd never witnessed the whole spectacle.... but still.

She still found it hard to believe that a mere seven year old child could outthink and corner ten armed men/women whilst simultaneously crash landing a half full jumbo jet on a derelict military base with everybody none the wiser save for his guardian Mouri Ran and herself. That wasn't the scary part though. The scary part was how he tore apart her half-truths and told her what exactly he thought she was doing. And gotten it spot on. (In her defence, she really had been training her peregrine falcon to follow short national flights instead of being crated in the cargo) (but seriously, how had the child gone from that to figuring out her occupation -both of them- and her nationality? Especially when she looked mostly Japanese and had a flawless osaakan accent?)

Anyway, she bounced along the corridor, several of her colleagues plastering themselves to the wall as she breezed by cheerfully, well aware that something had gotten the Wolf in a mood for merciless pranks. Nobody could forget the time she'd reversed gravity in the labs because one of her assistant technicians told her she was wrong. Or the time she'd set up the glitter trap assault course for the rookies who'd laughed at her latest invention. Good lords, how did the boss put up with her?

Sapphira white, for that was the young woman's name, was a terrifying genius in her own right, though she wasn't quite on the same level as Japan's Heisei-Holmes or Interpol's only non violent phantom thief. She was however, on par with her baby brother, who was quite famous up in London for his ability to solve nearly every crime he came across.

As she packed her bags, ensuring her passport and other documents were safely hidden in her black fedora, she whistled an old, familiar tune from an old anime movie she'd watched with her cute baby brother -who was actually turning eighteen this year. Ack!- smiling warmly as her various pets appeared from wherever they'd hidden themselves.

Hawthorne the peregrine falcon was first to arrive, as always, followed shortly by Amber and Silver, her two Bengal kittens. Sapphira had packed a full case by the time her other three pets arrived; two highly trained magician's doves called Blizzard and Snowflake and a young black colt named Mickey. The animals all looked at her adoringly in their various animal ways as she finished packing, the cats purring as they did their best to trip up their mistress.
