It's funny how whenever you hear a creaking noise in an old house people just tell you that it's the house settling or the pipes cooling and not to worry about it.
I've always wondered though, what causes the houses to really make those sounds?
Why do you only hear them at night, after the sun starts going down?
I found out.
I wish I hadn't.
The noise starts when it finds a crack in the base of your house. It's never big at first, but still, it starts to reach in. Every night at the same time it comes back and pushes a little more, bit by bit. It can wait, it knows you're not going anywhere. Over the years the creaking gets worse, night by night as it gets in a little further, inch by inch. At this point however, you've become accustomed to the sound and you don't even register it anymore.
It's counting on that.
One day, though, you may hear the creaking sound especially loud. If you ever hear that then you should get out of the house immediately. That noise means it's finally gotten all the way in. If you ignore it and go to bed, brush it off as leaky pipes or radiators, then it will wait until the darkest peak in the night, that moment when you're as deeply asleep as you can be. Then it will sneak up next to you, ever so calmly. It's waited for so long that it wants to take its time. After all, no point in not appreciating a meal that has been years in the making. It will stand directly next to you, taking in your smell. A delicacy like this should be savored. It will stay there and watch you intently every night and slip out by morning waiting for the right time. Because one of these nights... you'll wake up... and the moment you do, it will smile in satisfaction of finally being able to enjoy dinner.
Is there anything more delicious than earth shaking fear?
Goodnight...
