Violet looked down at her black heart necklace while slowly swinging on the back porch swing. She carefully opened it to reveal a small picture of her and her father hugging eachother with big smiles on their faces. Tears began to slowly fall down Violet's face. She closed the heart and held it tightly in her palm while sighing. She can still clearly remember the day her father gave her that beautiful necklace. It was exactly a year ago when he gave her that necklace...also the same day he died...
"Hey Violet, I got something for you!" Violet's father beamed while holding something behind his back. Violet raised her eyebrow and stared at her father. "What's behind your back?" She asked. "A handmade gift." He grinned. Violet rolled her eyes while grinning and said "Oh please tell me it's not one of those creepy-looking pet rocks you made me for Christmas." Violet's father laughed then said "No, no...I think you'll like this better." He then put out his hand which contained a tiny, red gift box. Violet giggled and took the gift box. She lifted the lid and saw a beautiful black heart necklace. She gasped and looked up at her father who was grinning. "You made this?" She asked and began to pet the necklace with her index finger realizing how smooth it was. "Yes, I did." The father said proudly. "It took awhile but I finished it just this morning." Violet smiled then hugged her father. "I love it, Dad!"
Violet sniffed and wiped her tears away recalling the happy memories with her father. "Hey, Violet." A familiar voice said from behind her. Violet swiftly turned in her seat to see her boyfriend Zach, giving her his famous goofy grin. The grin disappeared when he realized how depressed Violet was. "Aw, babe..." Zach whispered and quickly pulled her into an embracing hug. "I'm fine." Violet mumbled as her tears went onto Zach's shirt.
The two then sat down on the swing while holding hands. "Your dad would not want you to look like this." Zach said cooly as he put a strand of Violet's hair behind her ear. "I know..." Violet looked down at her feet. "So what are you doing here?" She asked quitely looking up at Zach. "Well, your mom called me saying you needed some serious cheering up so I drove on down to see my little angel." Zach grinned and put his arm around Violet. "Thank you," Violet smiled and put her head on Zach's shoulder finally starting to feel a little bit better.
The two then just sat in silence for about an hour. Zach stroked Violet's hair as Violet fiddled with her necklace. Zach understood that him just being there for Violet was enough for her so they just continued to sit in silence until Zach's phone went off. "Hang on babe," Zach said taking out his phone. "Hello?...Aw, ok...I'll see you soon then...bye." Zach hung up and sighed while looking down at his depressed girlfriend. "Sorry beautiful, but I gotta hit the road." "I understand." Violet said. "Love you," Zach bent down and kissed Violet's forehead. Violet managed to give him a small smile and say "I love you" back.
After Zach left, Violet sighed and held up her necklace letting it twirl and dangle before her. Then she noticed something strange. She looked past her necklace to see a orange cat looking at her on the porch railing. Violet set her necklace down next to her and slowly sat up staring at the cat. She stood still as the cat began to walk towards her. It then jumped up onto the swing and Violet smiled a little. She adored animals. But suddenly, the cat grabbed the necklace with its mouth and darted off the porch. Violet gasped and sprang up and ran as fast as she could after the cat.
