It was on a cloudy morning it look like it wanted to rain. Mrs Chioma bawled Olado her first Child to go and fetch in the cloth outside the house.
I woke up from sleep feel tired from the strenuous job I used to do when I heard my mother hollering my name from outside the house.
I stood up from my little bed and stretch my boby and worn my slipper and scuffled out of my room to go and answer my mom.
"Yes Mom I am coming out" I came outside the compound and saw her bringing the clothes on the line rope.
"Olado come and help me and remove the clothes can't you see it is drizing and it is about the rain" my mom utter.
"Okay Mom" I starting removing the clothes from the rope line with speed so that the rain with not soak the clothes I washed last night puting it in the bucket and I carried the bucket in inside the
room. I brought out the clothes and folded them neated on the bed and put them inside the clothes basket.I went outside the compound and decant the water from the jarecan into my bucket and carried into the bathroom to have my bath.
I came out with my wrapper tied around my herself holding the bucket and my soap dish and my towel slung on my shoulder heading to my room.
I entered my room in brought out my lotion and starting rubing in on my skin from head to toes.I brought out my white top and black skirt and put it on.
I carried my cartoon of gala which I sold on the highway express on the road to support from family.
My name is Olado the first daughter of late Obinna.I am 16 years old a young teenage girl slim tall and black.
I am an indigene from Abia State an Igbo speaking State.
Life has been unfair to me right from the start . Born into a family of 5 : 1 boy and 1 girl plus mum and dad , survival had been a struggle .
My father was a palm wine tapper and my mum was a petty trader who dealt in foodstuffs. We lived in a remote village somewhere in the South-eastern part of Nigeria.
My father’s palm wine tapping didn ’t earn him much and even after combining with the proceeds of my mum’ s petty trading, my parents still couldn’ t afford 3 square meals to sustain the family . I am the first child ; followed by a female before the one last male .
I went to school all girls secondary schoo .
Then disaster struck .
My father went for his usual palm wine tapping business and never came back. On dispersal of a search party, it turned out that he fell from the palm tree and died on the spot .This sudden death of my dad launched my family into more terrible hardship and my mum couldn’ t cope. Things grew worse after my dad ’ s burial.I had to drop out of secondary school in Ss1. At that time I was 14 years old and my immediate younger sister was 12 .
