Dear Family and Friends,
It was an ordinary day in my hometown of Pompeii. The date was the 24th of August 79 CE. I was in the local markets buying food for my sick father and newborn sister Sofia, but my mother had left 3 days after my sister was born. So, I had to take care of the family and cook all the meals at only 15-years-old. The market was right next to the famous volcano Vesuvius. It had erupted many times before but thought anything of it, and nobody left. It was midday and the markets were overflowing with people, left, right and centre. All you could see were faint signs of food stalls saying, 'Sale on now.' I had to push and shove my way through the big crowd to see what this stall was selling.
Once I reached it, I saw that the stall was right next to the volcano Vesuvius. The man running the stall had a kind and gentle smile. But then he froze. It was like time had just suddenly stopped. Everyone in the market froze too. Instead of a kind and gentle smile, it was a face of horror and shock. Suddenly, screams took over the loud chatter of people, and everyone was running around like headless chickens. Children, sprinting to every adult in sight, crying and screaming to just here their parents shout, 'I'm here!' Volcano Vesuvius had erupted. Then, BANG! Balls of lava shot out of the volcano like raining bullets. Ash filled the sky and it was like night, and the moon forgot to rise.
