“So have you talked to Kate yet,” my mom asked me as we were eating
dinner.
“No, not yet,” I mumbled.
“Why not,” she asked.
“Mom, I don’t feel like talking about it,” I told her.
“Christian, I want to help you,” she replied. “The only way I can do that is
if you let me.”
“I’ll think about it,” I sighed as I grabbed my plate and stood up. “I’m
going to go to bed, good night.”
“I love you,” she called after me.
“Love you, too,” I mumbled, then I put my plate in the sink and walked to
my room.
I grabbed my iPod and headphones, and started listening to music.
I didn’t want to be reminded by my mom how messed up things had
become between me and Kate. I ended up falling asleep in a matter of a
few minutes.
Kate
“Kate, can I come in,” my mom asked from outside my closed door.
“Sure,” I answered, and then she walked in.
“Are you okay,” she asked me.
“No, I’m confused,” I admitted.
“Well, why are you confused?”
“I broke up with Christian because I don’t want my dad to end up hurting
him just to get to me,” I told her.
“And do you feel like that was the right thing to do?”
“When I did it, it seemed like the right thing to do because I felt like I
was protecting him but now I feel like I made the wrong decision.”
“Is it cause you realize that you probably hurt him more by breaking up
with him than your dad will ever hurt him?”
“Not really,” I said. “It’s just that even if I broke up with him I know that if
my dad even tries hurting me Christian is still going to risk getting killed
just to save me.”
“Kate, before you came downstairs to see what was going on the day your
dad showed up here he gave me his number. I probably already know the
answer or at least I hope I do. Anyway, Kate, do you want to meet with your
dad to talk to him?”
“I want to because I want to see why he came here, but at the same time I’m
scared that he’s going to try to hurt me again.”
“You know that most of us aren’t going to want you to meet up with him,
