Christian

I was trying to find the cereal I wanted at the store when I heard someone behind me say, "Christian, is that you?" I turned around to see Kate's mom was who had spoken to me.

"Yeah, it's me," I said, turning around to see Kate's mom.

"I thought that you and Kate were hanging out," Kate's mom said confusedly.

"We're supposed to hang out but not until later," I told her. "She could be at the park thinking about everything."

"I hope so," Kate's mom sighed. "Why would she lie to me about where she was going, though?"

"I don't know," I said. "I promise you that I'll let you know if she doesn't show up to hang out with me later."

"Thank you," Kate's mom told me. "I should get going so I guess that I'll see you later."

"Bye," I replied and then she walked away.

Where are you Kate, I thought to myself before I went back to searching for cereal.

Kate

I finally decided that I had to go to the restaurant to meet my real dad when it was ten minutes before six.

When I got to Cavalier Pizza my real dad was already there.

"Well, you look nice," he told me as I walked up to the table he was sitting at.

"Don't flatter yourself," I said harshly.

"Okay," he said slowly.

"Look, I'm only staying here for an hour tops so whatever you want to say you better say it quickly," I told him.

"Kate, I don't think there's any reason that you need to be so hostile," he replied.

"Oh, I think there is," I said. "Just so you know time is ticking."

"Have you thought about the inheritance that I told you about a few days ago?"

"Yeah, and I don't want it," I answered. "I just can't wrap my mind around the fact that after everything you did to my why you would want to give me your inheritance."

"Think of it as compensation for what I did personally coming from me."

"But why would you want to personally give me compensation for what you did when you bragged about it and didn't even feel bad about it? Exactly, you wouldn't."

"You're a smart girl, but I really do want you to have my inheritance when I die."

"Don't you have anybody else that you abused that you can give your inheritance to because when I say I don't want it I mean it," I said.

"You don't trust me, do you?"

"Give me one reason why I should trust you," I told him.

"I've changed since I got out of jail for what I did to you," he said.

"The problem with believing you when you say that you've changed is the fact that you only had to spend a few months in jail when you should have spent years in prison. Don't try telling me that you've changed just because you spent some time in jail. I know that it would take more than a few months in jail to make you change."

"Maybe you'll be less hostile after you get something to eat," my real dad said.

"I wouldn't hold your breath," I muttered just before a waitress walked up to us to take our order.

Once the waitress left my real dad asked, "Kate, why are you being so hostile? I mean, I could have gone after your friends and your mom but I didn'."
