Chapter 12
One Month Later
"I mean no disrespect sir, but if you want to kill me, you're going to have to try a little harder." I stated dryly. I pulled myself up from the ground and looked Bill in the eyes.
His face was pulled down into a frown as he eyed my strained movements but I didn't give up.
"You are one strong woman." Bill complimented with approval in his eyes before wiping his bloody lip with the back of his hand. "Okay, come on. Let's try this again."
He lunged at me for the tenth time today. As soon as he reached me, I blocked his attack and brought my leg around the back of his before throwing him swiftly to the ground. I didn't waste any time in placing my foot on his chest and grinning down at him.
"That was easy enough." I commented.
Laughter brought me out of my victory and I looked up to see Mr. Fields and Devin, Marissa's brother, standing just a few feet from us.
I lifted my foot off Bill's chest and gave him a hand to get to his feet.
We both then turned to face the new arrivals.
"You trained her very fast." Mr. Fields commented.
Bill chuckled and shook his head at his father.
"No, she just already had a fan belt in street fighting. All I needed to do was teach her some of the basics that she missed and now even I'm eating dirt once in a while." Bill winked at me before walking closer to his father and son. "How is the shop doing?"
"It's doing well. We just closed early so we could see if she's improved on her target practice field course." Devin smirked at me. "If you succeed, you get to go on a date with me and if you fail, you get to go on a date with me."
I snorted at his pathetic attempt of asking me out.
"Devin, I've already told you. I'm not interested in you and probably never will be." I rolled my eyes and turned to face Mr. Fields. "Where is the field test going to take place?"
Mr. Fields didn't utter a word in response. Instead he just turned to his side and pointed towards the woods. It was the one place I haven't gone into yet and now I understood why, it was my final piece of training before I've reached my limit.
I was completely beat when we finally reached the house again. It's already getting dark and my entire body was aching with every step I took. After a month of training, I was finally done but now I could barely breathe from all the strain my body had suffered. Not even my daily jogs could have prepared me for the speed in which I had to succeed the field course. It was a nightmare.
"You did well, Beverly." Mr. Fields said and placed his hand on my shoulder.
Even after they found out my real name, they agreed to keep it a secret and used my new name when addressing me. It was for their safety, I didn't really care about my own safety much.
"I could have done better." I muttered bitterly.
"Yes, if you had more time but for the time you did have to do all of that, you are remarkable." Bill commented from my other side. I could hear the pride in his voice and knew he only spoke the truth.
"I'd just like to know how the hell she learned to handle a gun that fast." Devin stepped a little ahead of us to send me a questioning look. He's been begging me to tell him about my gun experience from the very first time I shot the gun his grandfather had handed me.
