Warning// drowning, almost death, angst.

There wasn't a writing prompt for this, it's just a story I wrote forever ago...

The world around him seemed to grow darker and darker, as he fought against the waves that pushed him down. Ever fiber in his being was screaming in agony, was fighting to breathe surface, to survive. The water was raging, as if it was filled with unspoken emotions, the waves became stronger and rougher as they pulled him down. He was fighting as if it was the last thing he'd ever do, because in reality, it just might be the last thing he does.

His heart was racing, his mind ripping itself apart thing to find a way to survive. The pain was consuming his entire body, he felt like he couldn't move, yet his body kept clawing at the water, trying to pull him to the surface. He wanted to give up, to sink in the deep waters, to have his finally moment in peacefulness of this bottomless place. Only it wouldn't work. His body continued to swim, to claw at the water, to fight. His mind would not except this as an end, this would not kill him. His lung were screaming to just take a breath, but his mind fought against that instinct.

Slowly, he was giving up....His mind was slowly stopping the fight against the instinct to take a breath... His body was slowly stopping the rapid movements, slowly sinking....Darkness clouded his vision....The burn in his lungs was so painful, but he knew it wold end soon....As his mind began shutting down, memories began to play....A smile spread across his face as he remembered his friends and all the dumb things they did....Tears began to escape form his eyes as he remembered his little neighbor, who thought he was the greatest thing ever....A bright light began to shine through the water....Bubbles escaped and rose to the top, breaking the surface, the water looked so clam form down here....The darkness was closing in, he was ready to die....

Suddenly his body surged upwards, he wasn't going to die like this. Not today, not now, and not anytime in the future. The memory of all the people who cared about him, fueled his reason to keep fighting, his fight for survival became intense as his body was filled with a fire. His head was pounding, his lungs screaming louder and louder with every movement, his body heavy as his fight continued. The light became brighter as he grow closer to the top, the tears mixed with the water around him as he continued.

His head broke the surface of the water, his lungs screaming in relief as he inhaled for the first time in what felt like forever. The shouts of people could be heard as his body began to float, the waves grown rough again as they rushed to save him, but he had already saved himself. The light became brighter as they came closer, his body chilled by the freezing waters, his eyes closed to afraid to open to see the bright light, but his mind racing with thoughts.

His life was ending, death had left its mark upon him, it tried to take him, but didn't expect the fight he would give to survive. Death was not prepared for the fight that broke out between the two, never seeing how strong this man was, and how he wasn't done living yet. Death let the man go, he had won this time, but next time he would come willingly.

The man lived, and death left with a smile, for it had been a long time since anyone had fought against him. Seems he wasn't done living just yet, seemed there were things that shouldn't be left undone.
