Instead of calling for help, they phone Person A and carry on a casual conversation as if nothing is wrong, making sure to mention how much they love them befre their time runs out
The knife embedded in her side laid perfectly between two ribs, the tip found its home in her lungs. The pain raced around as her heartbeat picked up, her body going into shock. She didn't remember falling, but soon her back met the cold and ragged pavement. The air above her filled with condensation as she exhaled shakily but only thought of her beloved filled her head. The nagging feeling of knowing the truth pulled her mind as she reached for her phone, calling that oh so familiar contact. Her hand gripping the handle before pulling the knife from it's home, she dropped it as she harshly pressed against the bleeding hole.
Before she called, she took a moment to stare at the contact picture she in place for her beloved; It was a rather silly picture, her girlfriend had her cheek squished, her lips puckered and her eyes closed.
Her eyes flutter closed at the memories danced around her head, every detail, from the moment she clumsily dropped coffee in front of her future girlfriend because she was starstruck; to the last night phone calls, the time they moved into together, and the moment that she disappeared.
She had left months before, fighting in an unseen war. A war started by her beloved, only her beloved fought on the opposite side, a side that needed to lose or it would end the lives of many. She pressed the call button and waited, humming along to the melody that played.
"Hello?" The soft voice filled her head as tears being to fall from her bloodshot brown eyes. That voice made her forget of the freezing temperature around her, as well as the bleeding wound.
"Mia, Hey." Her voice sounded breathy as she forced herself to speak, the hole in her lung making it almost impossible.
"Why are you calling me? you left, remember." Mia's once soft voice turned as cold as the air around her.
"You think I don't remember that?" Her eyes rolled, knowing how this would end. "Look, that's not why I'm calling. I need to tell you something."
"Unless it's the locations of the bases, then I don't want hear anything from you."
"You and I both know I'd only ever tell you when I'm dead. Now, shut up and listen." She breathed in deeply, wincing at her mistake before slowly exhaling. The phone line held nothing but Mia's soft breathing as she waited.
"I left for a reason, not because I wanted to, but because I if didn't I would never forgive myself, I love you; So much that it hurts, I've never fallen in love before you, but god the moment I dropped that coffee on your shoes, I knew I was stuck." Her hand pulled away from the bleeding wound as she accepts death, now that she has told her beloved that truth. "I know I should have said something before I let, but I didn't have the words to tell you how much you mean to me."
"You can't do this," Mia replied with angry dripping from her voice. "You can't leave me alone, then call me out of nowhere 4 months later, telling me you love me. We are not getting back together, I'm engaged now, and he loves me."
Silence filled that air around her as Mia continued to rant about her "new man" but she couldn't hear anything. The blood loss becoming too much for her body to work anymore, the phone fell beside her head, she stared into the open sky. The stars shined bright, but still, hide behind the dark clouds as the rain began to fall heavily.
The feeling of someone pulling her into them filled her heart with warmth but not her body. Her skin cold to the touch as she shifted her piercing eyes to gaze into Alex's concerned ones, but she couldn't understand was his eyes began to fill with tears. As she tried to lift her hand to wipe them away, she found that she couldn't move them.
"Alex," She looked so small at that moment," I can't wipe away your tears, but don't cry, this had to happen." Her voice no longer had that fear stiking intimidation edge to it but was replaced with a voice filled with warmth and kindness. He couldn't stop the tear, non of them could; This was their best warrior, reduced to nothing but a bruised and bloodied girl laying in the middle of the rain on a cold winter night. Her breathing slowed, her eyes staying closed longer, she skin losing its tone. Soon enough, silence surrounded them as her breathing stopped, the rain continued to beat against them, and Mia's angry rants sounded faint to them all.
The rage in Alex grew as he held the trademark knife for the opposite side before he picked up the phone and let out a growl. Mia stopped in fear at the sound, not knowing what was happening.
"Mia," he spoke in a low and deadly tone as he stood," She's dead. I hope you understand what this means." She did, It meant that there was nothing protecting her anymore, just her father's men, but they were no match against an enraged army of people who had just lost the one person that had lead them through the dark.
Death was coming, it had taken the one person who could stop this foolishness, and now it was coming for Mia.
