The first quidditch match of the year was finally here, and the Gryffindor common room was buzzing with excitement as the game loomed nearer. Their chances against Slytherin were quite good considering the team Harry had managed to put together.
Ron, however, looked absolutely petrified. We were sat in the common room all gathered around him, trying to offer him some words of comfort.
"You'll do brilliantly, Ron. Just don't overthink it," Hermione soothed him, placing a gentle hand on his arm to calm him down.
"Yeah, Ron. It's only the first game. It's not like it determines our fate for the rest of the season.." Fred said sarcastically, causing Ron's eyes to go wide.
"Oh stop it, there's no need to tease him!" I slapped Fred on the arm, earning a laugh from George.
"Ron, don't worry about it, I wouldn't have chosen you if you weren't the better player.." Harry confirmed, at precisely the wrong moment.
Cormac had just rounded the corner, books in hand and clearly hoping to study in our little alcove.
"Sorry, this corner's taken." Ginny spat, venom dripping from her words.
He met my eyes, and then quickly averted his gaze.
"Can we help you with anything else, mate?" Harry asked, also sounding quite angry. His response surprised me.
"Uh, Eliza, could I have a word?"
Cormac met my eyes once more, trying to muster up a smile but it came out more as a feeble grimace.
"What for?" George asked all of a sudden, hand in his pocket around his wand.
"It's okay, Georgie," I patted him on the shoulder and stood up, "I only have a minute," I told Cormac shortly.
I didn't want to talk to him at all, but the look in his eyes was one of pity and for a moment I felt a bit sorry for him. I thought I could at least show him some kindness and listen to whatever it was he was itching to say.
We walked out of the portrait hole, and into an empty hallway. I crossed my arms in front of myself, trying to look stronger, even tougher. I wasn't interested in allowing him to see how weak he had made me.
"What is it, then?" I asked quickly.
He sighed, "Lavender and I called it off."
What? Confusion swept over me like a monsoon. What on earth did that have to do with me? And why did he think I, of all people, would want to hear about it?
"I'd say I'm sorry, but I'm not. What's that got to do with me, Cormac?" I almost yelled at him, feeling angry at him for bringing her up.
"Well, I was thinking you may want to give me a second chance."
I nearly laughed out loud, but instead settled on looking at him incredulously.
"Oh, you thought I'd give you a second chance did you? Thought I'd so easily forget how you treated me and then tossed me to the side in front of everyone in the common room?"
"Well, I just thought-"
"No. That's the problem, you weren't thinking. Go find some other girl to mess with. I've got enough going on in my life, I don't need to deal with you too." I turned on my heal to walk away until I heard his voice once more.
"Oh, come on! We had good times together, remember?"
I turned back to him and raised my wand before he could process what I was doing.
"Locomotor Wibbly!" and just like that, he collapsed to the ground as if the bones had left his legs.
"Oh, come off it. Reverse this!" He groped around for his wand, which had escaped his grasp during his fall.
"Sorry, I've got homework to finish."
And with that, I turned and walked back towards the common room."He what?" George asked me, eyes nearly bulging out of his skull.
I had rejoined the group in the common room, relaying to them what Cormac had told me.
"Yes, he thought I'd 'give him a second chance' or whatever. So I jinxed him. I imagine someone's found him by now.." I muttered aimlessly. With any hopes, Filch would be the one who found him.
"Blimey, you can be quite scary.." Fred mumbled, taking a couple steps away from me.
"Well, don't cross me." I stated simply as if it was obvious.
George chuckled beside me, and Ginny looked proud as ever.
"You lot better get some rest before the match tomorrow," I turned to George, patting him on the shoulder as I stood up.
He groaned, following my lead and soon so did everyone else.
Ginny gave Harry a swift kiss goodnight and followed Hermione up to the dormitories. Fred, Harry and Ron trudged up the stairs as well, Fred and Harry seemingly supporting Ron as his fear was apparently affecting the way he walked.
"Do me a favor and hit Malfoy with a bludger tomorrow, yeah?" I smiled at George, batting my eyelashes in hopes that it might actually work.
He gave a loud laugh, "I'll do my best. Believe it or not I aim for him every match, whether we're playing Slytherin or not."
I laughed, and turned to head up to bed.
"Well in that case, aim one at McLaggen, too." I threw out over my shoulder.
I barely heard George mutter, "Already planning on it," as I shut the dormitory door behind me.
