I walk down the street, passing farms and ranches. Horses are grazing in near by paddocks lifting their heads to see what I'm doing.
I'm soon brought back down to earth due to a loud yelp and an even louder bang. Then I see a dog with it's tail between it's legs creeping away from a dark figure. I stop in my tracks, hoping I haven't been spotted.
"You worthless piece of crap. You mongrel- Ugh, stay right here. I'm taking you to the pound right when the sun's up" a masculine voice cuts through the thin air. The man kicks the dog in the ribs making it yelp again.
The man walks back inside his house, locking the door as well. After a couple of minutes, I run towards the dog who had lied down under a tree. I walk up to the dog, who when it sees me slinks away.
"Its ok I'm not like him. Come on, I won't hurt you" I say in a sickly sweet tone of voice trying to gain the dogs trust. Thankfully the dog trusts me enough that it comes out of the shadows.
"Hi, what's your name?" I ask checking the dogs collar. It reads "Bob". "You've got to be joking?" I exclaim. I look over the dog and find out that its a girl. She's a black and white long haired collie with sweet eyes and a playful attitude.
"I think I'll call you Fly!" I say, unbuckling her collar and chucking it in the bushes. "Come on, you're coming with me"
I start to walk onto the street again but stop to see where Fly is. She just stands there, confused on what to do. "You don't want to stay with him" I state gesturing toward where the man lives. As soon as she sees me pointing at the man's house, Fly runs toward me and away from her previous home.
We finally make it to my destination, the train tracks. Every morning a cargo train comes through at 3:45am and picks up and drops off goods for local supermarkets. I check my phone which says its 3:43am and shortly after I hear a train horn.
I pick up Fly and hide behind a parked car. "Ok Fly, there will be no barking or whining until we are safely on the train and moving, got it?" I ask. And she licks my chin in approval.
A group of men get out of one of the carriages and start to pack and unpack the train. Another man checks how much fuel they have. I decide its now or never. I place Fly on the ground and motion her to get on the train. She speedingly runs up to a carriage and makes a flying leap just making it.
I check if anyone is in view. After I give myself the ok, I run and jump into the same carriage as Fly. Minutes later, someone comes and closes the door to the carriage and soon the train lurches forwad, chuckng me to the floor.
There's no turning back now.
