I'm Riley Harper. Senior at Ridgewood High. Los Angeles has been my home since I was six.
It was that very year I held a chainsaw for the first time. Before you go jumping to conclusions, I'm not a serial killer or anything like that. I'm just an average high schooler who has taken the odd interest in furniture making, and general carpentry.
I wouldn't say I'm a straight A student but I'm definitely close. I've always had this weird love for languages, so much that I can proudly say I'm fluent in five; English, French, Spanish, Korean and Tagalog. When I'm not sawing, I'm reading a new comic or listening to Kpop.
Asides all that, I have a pretty boring life for a seventeen year old, if you ask me. But all that is about to change, because this year I'm getting my name on the Glitter Wall.
What exactly is the Glitter Wall, you ask?
Well, it's just this stupid tradition at my school for the popular girls - Glitter Girls- to sign their names on a stupid wall that's now tagged the Glitter Wall.
In other words, it's a really big deal.
Why is it a big deal, you ask?
Well, because you don't just make yourself a Glitter Girl overnight. It's a status that is earned from years and years of hard work - if hard work means being effortlessly beautiful and famous.
And how the hell is a totally infamous and struggling below average girl like me planning on getting my name on a wall as important as that, you ask?
Easy. I present my ultimate Girl's Guide To Glitter.
You see, being unpopular for my past years in high school was both a blessing and a curse.
Curse being me being well, unpopular and blessing being me able to observe the Glitter Girls.
I can proudly say I've observed and decoded the rules, levels and shortcuts of the popularity game.
Now I'm sure you're itching to see this ah-mazing list, well I give y-
"Harvey", I called using my other hand to support my cane.
He looked up at me from my bed, pausing shoving his face with marshmallows. " What?"
And that's my best friend, Harvey Lee. Definitely what every girl at school would call cute, cool, hot and whatnot but what I'd call an annoying guy who I have had to put up with since the 4th grade.
"You're distracting me", I replied. " I'm trying to tell you my guides to glitter but it feels like you aren't listening"
"Of course I am", he said putting the bag of marshmallows away after filling up his hands completely with them. " Uh, you were saying something about how being popular is a blessing and a curse"
"That was like five minutes ago", I said hitting the cane hard on the marker board making him flinch. "Now listen or I'm telling Summer Hathaway you are making a scrapbook with the pictures, you creep took of her "
Summer Hathaway is this girl Harvey has been crushing on since forever. But for someone who can boast of scoring five girls in a week, he sure doesn't have the guts to ask Summer out.
He immediately dropped the marshmallows. "Okay, okay. I'm listening.", before murmuring, " Blackmail much?"
"What did you say", I asked holding the cane intimidatingly with both hands.
" Nothing", he replied, raising his hands again in surrender.
"Thank you"
"The Ultimate Girl's Guide To Glitter", I said hitting each number as I say it with the cane. " One. Be Glitter Glam. Glitter up your closet. Not to be taken literally. Two. Be Glitter Gorgeous. Be breathtakingly beautiful. Three. Be Glitter famous. Show up at all parties and own all of social media. Four. Know the Glitter Gossip - Gloss for short- know every thing going on at school. And five. Date or have a fling with someone on the Bro Squad"
That was Harvey and I at the beginning of summer. Now two days till the beginning of the school year, I've been in and out of so many stores I didn't know existed with Harvey, my piggy bank's completely empty. Watched so many makeup tutorials, I could transform Loner Sarah in homeroom into a Cover Girl. Read every gossip magazine I could get my hands on. Mastered the complicated art of taking selfies. Read so many articles on how to start and keep a conversation going, I could start a YT channel on just that. Been to so many parties with Harvey, they could last me a lifetime. Figured out my human shortcut to the Glitter Wall; Paris Blank. And even the hardest part; figured out my Bro fling.
Since the only Bros who didn't have hoes - sorry I had to - were Harvey Lee and Kyle Anderson, and I was totally not ready to fake-date my best friend, I was left with Kyle.
Not that that was any better.
Kyle Anderson. I wouldn't exactly say we were enemies but we weren't exactly best friends either, despite the fact that he was the closest to Harvey among the Bros. This might have had something to do with the fact that the last time I did have a 'conversation' with him was back in 4th grade when I had attacked him for stealing my favorite pencil.
Since then, we had never said a word to each other, just left with the occasional glares in the halls.
He should thank me though. He and Harvey became friends 'cos back then in 3rd grade, Harvey had intervened.
Anyways, it all didn't matter much to me now. Our little feud was gonna have to take a backseat 'cos I wasn't gonna let my ticket to glitter go 'cos of some childhood issues.
I was going to make Kyle Anderson fall for me.
