Chapter 1

New Beginning

"Ouch, shit!" I mutter uselessly to myself as I slice my thumb open with a box cutting knife. I then dash over to a drawer in the kitchen to grab a dish towel. I put pressure on the cut to stop the bleeding, although I know its useless, the cut will be non-existent in a couple minutes. I think this show is mostly out of habit than actual need to care for my wound. It doesn't even hurt actually. I cursed out of habit as well, incase your wondering. Ever since the night of the accident I feel no pain, and depending on severity of my wound, I heal at a amazing rate. Not feeling pain can actually be quite irritating if you ask me, for example; when ever I receive an injury, I am hardly ever aware of it, and that makes people wonder about me. Another thing you should know about me is, I have a gift. Its nothing spectacular really, all I can do is sense peoples emotions, and know exactly how they are feeling. Don't get me wrong, I am no Jasper Hale, I cannot control moods. I wish, it would make my life a little easier.

After a couple minutes, I remove the dish towel from my thumb, and see the cut is gone, and the towel is clean of my blood. I cannot explain that either, really. It just happens. Once my injury is gone, all signs that the injury ever existed are gone with it. I think in the future that could cause me some problems as well.

After refolding the dish towel and placing it back in the drawer where it belonged, I return to my boxes. I then pick up a box that reads CLOTHES on the flap of the box, written in red permanent marker. I then walk into my new room and drop the box of clothes on my bed, and walk back into the living room.

I am living in a one bedroom apartment in the Neah Bay area for right now, its all I can afford. Seeing as I'm only gonna be known the this tiny town as a 17 year old emancipated girl, job opportunities will be scarce. Yes, that's my story to why I'm on my own. When first arriving to this town I gathered all the necessary paper work to back up my story, saying for personal reasons I can no longer live with my parents. While sitting in the office of the high school I will be attending, explaining my story, I sensed their skepticism. In the end they didn't sound there thoughts, they just smiled, and welcomed me to Neah Bay Junior/Senior High School. Tomorrow will be my first day of my second time as a junior.

If me being immortal is going to consist of repeating high school for the rest of eternity, then you can count me out. I will gladly trade places with any mortal, any day of the week. Many people would love to have what I have, but I honestly couldn't hate it more.

While pulling up to the front entrance of Neah Bay High School, I groan miserably to myself. This is the first day of my never-ending torturous life. I then pull into the nearest parking spot, away from everyone else, embarrassed by my sad excuse of a car. I then glance at the clock on the dash. 7:35. Great, I'm early. I then settle in comfortably to my seat and turn on the radio to hear the song "Smile" by Uncle Kracker was playing.

I was close to dosing off in my car when I hear a tap on my window. I then jump, and look out the window anxiously to see who it was. Looking out my window I see a tall, dark brown haired girl smiling at me with bright blue eyes. When she sees that I have noticed her too she waves excitedly and motions for me to roll down my window. Hesitantly I glance at the button that's supposed to roll down the window, and with a red face I place my hands on the window and force it down. I glance at her while doing this and see she cracked a smile at my crappy window.

When I get my window down the brunette smiles again "Hey, are you new here?" she asks nicely. I then nod my head slowly "Yeah, today's my first day here." I say nervously. Her face then lights up with a big smile, revealing perfect white teeth. "That's great! My names Kyla! Kyla Hendrickson." she says and holds a well manicured hand, I take it and shake her hand. "Ebony. Ebony Moore." I smile. "That's a pretty name. Nice to meet you Ebony!" she beams. "Thank you... You... um have a pretty name too, Kyla." I stutter. I then become curious to her intensions and focus on her mood. I then see that her mood is just pure happy, and with slight curiosity, probably for me since I'm the new kid.

"Thank you." she laughs. I then hear the sound of an old fashioned bell. "Oh, that's the bell. You wanna walk with me inside?" she asks hopefully. I then smile sweetly at my, hopefully, new friend. "Sure." I say and jump out of my car and lock it.

Kyla and I walk in silence for a moment, but then Kyla breaks the silence. "So where are you from?" she asks curiously. I then side glance at her before answering "Belfield." Kyla's eyebrows furrow in confusion. "Where's that?" she asks. "North Dakota." I answer. "So why did you move here anyway? I mean why would anyone wanna live in this small town?" she asks me. I hesitate before answering, like I always do, preparing to lie through my teeth. "You know what, its none of my business. You don't have to tell me." she says, sensing my hesitation. "Oh, no, its fine. I moved out of my parents house. I got emancipated. My parents... We don't get along very well." I lie badly, if I do say so my self, but I am definitely getting better at telling that lie repeatedly. "That's awesome!" she enthuses. I then look at her questioningly. "Oh, I don't mean you not getting along with your parents part. I mean the emancipated part. What's it like, living on your own?" she asks with genuine interest. My eyes then fall to the pavement. "Lonely." I say sadly as we enter Neah Bay High School.
