Chapter 2

Mysterious

As Kyla and I walk through the front doors of the high school, and into the main office, I see this gorgeous guy, with short jet black hair and blue-green eyes, staring at me intently from the chairs in the office. He may have been extremely beautiful, but the staring was getting a little creepy. Was there something on my face? Suddenly, feeling self conscious, I unzip my purse and pull out a mirror. I then see nothing is there and quickly put it away and look at the boy quizzically, but when he sees me staring back he quickly looks away.

"Ebony?" Kyla says waving a hand in front of my face. "Earth to Ebony Moore?" I then look away from him and realize she must have been trying to talk to me while I was busy staring at him. "Oh, uh, sorry. What were you saying?" I ask while shaking my head. She then laughs at me and rolls her eyes. "Staring at Carter, now are we?" she asks with a giggle. "Who's Carter?" I ask. "Oh, you know who I'm talking about, Ebony. Don't play dumb. I seen you staring at him." she says motioning towards Carter. "Oh, him." I look back over at him, only to see him staring again "No, I wasn't staring at him." I lie. Kyla then raises her eye brows at me "Yeah, whatever you say." she says with a laugh.

"Do you need to get your schedule, or do you already have it?" Kyla asks while walking down the hallway. I then pull my schedule I had picked up yesterday out from my pocket and wave it in the air. "Yep, got it right here." I say. Kyla then snatches the schedule out of my hand and starts studying it. "Oh, my God! Yay! We got English together!" she says happily and continues looking at the paper "And Bio 2!" she adds. "What period are those classes?" I ask. "English is first period, and Biology 2 is fourth period. And you know what that means, don't you?" she asks me with a wide smile on her face. I then narrow my eyes at her and shake my head. "That means we can have lunch together, silly! And I can introduce you to all my friends." she says enthusiastically.

While walking down the hall with Kyla, I get to thinking to myself. Should I really let myself get close to anyone here? I have already had to give up my family and friends back in Belfield, do I really want to go through that again? I know I will eventually have to leave this place. After so many years, I will have to leave before anyone notices that I'm not changing. It was hard to leave everyone back home. I don't really want to go through that again. Wouldn't it be easier to not get close to anyone, so it wouldn't hurt as bad to leave them? That may sound selfish, but since I'm immortal, it would be even more selfish of me to get close to someone knowing I will have to leave, and end up hurting them in the process. It would either be that or I burden them with having to keep my secret. Even if I did tell anyone, would they even stick around long enough to prove that I am telling the truth? Or would they leave thinking I'm just crazy. This is clearly not a win-win situation.

Suddenly I remember that I have no clue where I am going. I then stop in the middle of the hallway. Kyla immediately notices and turns around to look at me. Looking confused, she narrows her eyes. "Is something wrong?" she asks. I then continue walking with her "Yes, I have no idea where I'm going. I need to go get a map." I tell Kyla. She then smiles at me and shakes her head "You already have one, silly." she replies brightly. I then shake my head, raising one eyebrow at her and say "Um, what are you talking about? Where do I have a map?" Kyla then points at herself and says "Me. We have first period together remember? And fourth." I then nod my head at her "Yeah, but how does that help me for the other classes?" I ask, still lost. "Well, for today, I will help you find all of your classes." she says. "Well, thanks Kyla. That's sweet of you." I say. She then shakes her head and smiles "No thanks necessary, I would do it happily for a new friend." she says nicely.

As Kyla and I make our way towards our first period, I decide to ask about that Carter guy from the office. "So, who was that guy in office?" I ask her. "Oh, you mean Carter Wright? Well he is only one of the most beautiful guys in this entire school. But I don't know much about him. He mostly keeps to himself, and a few close friends. I think he might be gay though... Such a sad thought." she answers with a pout. "Why do you think that?" I ask curiously. "Well, I have never seen him with a girl before, I mean REALLY with a girl. He hasn't had a girlfriend since he moved here." she says as we turn to make our way into our first period class.
