Chapter 3

Curiosity

I fled to the bathroom until there was only five minutes left in English class, trying to keep the headaches away for as long as possible. I wish I knew how to avoid Carter all together, but that itself would deem a problem. Its already too late to switch classes, it's the beginning of December and the deadline for schedule changes was in late September. Yeah, I checked before returning to English. So that is not even a possibility now. Stupid Carter.

When I place my hand on the door to English, I keep repeating the command to myself in my head "Don't look at Carter." over and over again. I hope that works, because that boy is hard not to look at. When the door is open I see Ms. Crutchfield sitting at her desk grading papers. When she notices I've returned she looks at me and smiles.

"Oh! Your back. Are you alright, Ebony? I got worried when you didn't come back." says Ms. Crutchfield.

"I'm fine. On the way back I started feeling sick and went to the bathroom." I explain, I mean lie.

"Do you need to go home?" she asks with concern in her voice.

"Oh, no. I'll be okay." I say and walk towards my seat in front of Kyla.

"What's up, Ebb's? You sick?" Kyla asks when I sit down. I then shake my head and answer "No, I'm fine. It was just some strange sudden headache, but its gone now." I lie. Kyla narrows her eyes at me as if she doesn't believe me, but she just sighs and says "Okay, well, I'm glad you feel better." she then forces a smile, but I can tell she knows something's up.

After about a minute the bell for second period rings and I'm off to my Algebra 2 class, with Kyla leading the way. All my weirdness from first period seems to have left Kyla's thoughts, and now she is back to normal, going on and on about her friends and some of her favorite teachers. Kyla is so nice to me, I don't even deserve it. All I have fed to her is lies, but what can I do? I cant tell her the truth. She would think I'm crazy, and soon after that the whole school would think so as well.

"Okay, here's Ms. Mason's class. But beware, she's evil." Kyla states simply, with the straightest face, I can't help but laugh.

"What? I'm dead serious! I heard one time she whacked this freshmen in the head with a ruler so hard it left a huge knot on his head! Can you believe it? Just because he got an answer wrong. His parents tried to get her fired, but they had no proof that she actually did it just because out of all those days, that day just so happened to be the day the camera's stopped working. It's certainly a shame though. My opinion is that she planned it and messed up the camera's herself but, of coarse, no one listens to poor little Kyla!" she says, and pouts out her lip, pretending to be sad.

"Well, I guess lets hope for the sake of my head, Ms. Mason doesn't have any thing she can cause permanent damage with. I am seriously horrible at math." I say, although I know Ms. Mason could never do anything that could hurt me.

"I'll say a little prayer for you then! Your gonna need it. She loves to pick on new students." she says.

I groan miserably. This is all I need. A evil witch of an Algebra teacher bugging the living daylights out of me all class period. If I could still get head aches, with the exception of the ones Carter gives me, I would surely have one right about now.

"Thanks, Kyla." I say.

"No prob, Ebb's! And good luck! Your gonna need that too!" she says and dashes off for her next class.

I walk into class, and sit in the first desk I see. After sitting there for a moment I realize that that's probably a very bad idea. Sitting in the front seat is just asking for her to call on me. I am about to get up when a hand pushes my books forcefully back onto my desk, causing them to leave my hands, and make a loud slamming noise, causing me to jump.
